Subaru BRZ or Toyota F86 !!!!!

For me this looks like a step in the right direction style wise, but still a far cry from past efforts. Take away the things that attracted me to Subaru in the first place, turbo-charged engine and AWD and what do we have? Sorry Subaru, but my boat is not floating ....
Or am I massively behind on the press releases and will there be a turbo-d AWD model?

From what I was told a turbo variant is not on the cards. In order to fit a turbo in, a new bonnet would be required and all this would raise the COG (They were very keen to keep this low) ruining the handling of the car.
They did say, however, that it would be right for tuners to go for it. In fact they expect it to happen.

If it was AWD and around 350bhp i would be more interested. The fact is that the reviews say that it handles fantastically but is underpowered. Why would i go to something slower than i have already. Its an evolution with every car i buy having more power than the previous. I am a Subaru addict but this aint going to be on my shopping list unless a faster version is planned. Even if the centre of gravity is raised a bit, if it handles like my impreza i wont be complaing.

I like the sound of the new brz, actually.
I don't care if it's out and out faster in a drag race, as long as the car feels nice to drive. By nice to drive, I mean that it handles well, and stops well. The low weight and the RWD bodes well for both IMO.
We've got two cars at the moment - a tuned subaru with a bit of everything, and a standard mini cooper turbo diesel. The Mini is a more *fun* to drive on anything bar tracks and dual carriage ways, because it's a little, relatively light car, with glorious steering feed back and half decent suspension. Of course the subaru would murder it on almost any track, road etc except maybe for some really tight and twisty stuff, but it doesn't mean the mini can't be more fun. Outright pace is not everything.

OK, it might be slightly underpowered, but how much power would spoil this car? Turning it into a grunty oversteering undriveable mess?

The whole 'point' of this new car is not about power & pace and covering ground with huge levels of grip, it's about being fun to drive, and at lower speeds than the Impreza

I went to the Ring last July with my new Saloon and 2 MX-5's I had much more. Fun and quicker laps in the underpowered Mx5's

a) Keep away from the cretins on the road
b) Make progress (officer)
c) Decrease time from a- b - most drives i do are around 100 miles requiring frequent overtakes.
d) Push your own limits
e) pass everything on the motorway without changing down.
I would already be compromising by getting a smaller space to accommodate my needs, you now say i need to compromise on power as well at the expense of handling?
Its just not an impreza replacement as offered

Initially, as world-wide demand is extremely high, we will bring in one variant of BRZ, the highest spec available (shown on the Allocation system as 'high spec'). This is the vehicle you saw at Coleshill. The main features are as follows:
Later in the year we will introduce a second derivative without the heated leather seats (shown on the Allocation system as 'mid spec')
Following that, a further 'stripped out' derivative aimed at those customers who wish to tune and fettle the BRZ to their own specification will be made available (shown on the Allocation system as 'low spec').
As yet, naming conventions have not been decided hence, referring to the three models and high, mid and low spec.
Technical
Subaru have done everything they can to keep the weight and centre of gravity of the vehicle as low as possible. As we know, reducing body-roll is one of the key tenets of Subaru's engineering philosophy, as less body roll equates to greater stability and grip. As a result, the BRZ is an incredibly compact package: it is the world's smallest RWD 2+2 coupe (4,240mm x 1,775mm x 1,425mm) and has the lowest centre of gravity of almost any vehicle on the road: 460mm. This means more than half the mass of the car is below knee-height.
The BRZ features a 2.0litre FA Boxer engine with Direct Injection technology that produces 200ps and 205Nm of torque in a body that weighs just 1,220kg, that's a power to weight ratio of 164ps/tonne.
This all adds up to a driver focussed car intent on delivering the most engaging driving experience possible.
It will be available with 6 speed short-shift manual and paddle operated automatic gearboxes.
Colours
The BRZ will initially be available in two colours: Sterling Silver Metallic and WR Blue Mica. The latter being exclusive to Subaru. Later in the year as additional production becomes available we will also add four more colours: Satin White, Crystal Black Silica, Dark Grey Metallic & San Remo Red . As per the rest of the range, the special paint finishes will attract an additional charge.

It's not meant to be a replacement for the Impreza, it's a different type of car, it looks like a great adition to the enthusiast car market place to me.
I think this car is going to be great, would very much like to give one a go.

I agree, but its not going to draw me away from my Impreza unless as a second car, which is unlikely unless they bring out a convertible version aka nissan 370z.

It's going to be a massive seller for Subaru and short demand for the first 6months
This is the future for subaru as the 25mpg 34k hatch market with £500 road tax is lets be honest finished in the uk
Just need to move the time warped classic owners into the future and keep the classics wrapped up in the garages
The bug and blob eye owners will follow the rusting classics in a few years
The wise owners will wrap them up in cotton wool and don't fiddle with the engines
Most of the hatch owners will have new engines fitted without chocolate pistons so they will be ok for a few years to the BRZ temps them

Hate to say it,but lets be honest here, the good old days of SUBARU are OVER.
Thats to say,the Subarus we know and love, realistically these cars are going to have to start a whole new revolution in ownership because its a totally different car and in no way related to the classics(which by the way are called CLASSICS for a reason).
I no longer own a Subaru, but still love them,so i,m not here to just slate them because i dont have one any more,it was an age thing really, after 12 years of Subarus,i realised theres better cars out there for the money, and after the rallying died a death,i think the marque slowly started dying as well,as you can only go to so many Subaru meets to look at the same old Subarus over and over.
Hopefully Subaru will price this car realistically to drum up some interest in whats probably a better car all round, but the first one was sooo good,it going to take some living up to.
Everything moves on i suppose, but they created in the classic i think,a legend that people dont want to move on from because it was almost too good to believe, yeah its an old car now, pretty ugly as well, not green at all, ncap score 0,noisy,basic,but thats all the things i loved about it.

Subaru's have always scored well in crash tests compared to the equivilent MY competitors, the classic has stood up well in some pretty major crashes. The newer cars are safer, but you can say that for every car brand.
Subaru as a brand are booming compared to other car makers, just not in the UK. Hopefully the BZR turns things around.

Will be great to get in a rear wheel car again. Looking to enter it in next years trackday events. Should do well
Subaru brands are doing well all except the WRX Range

Looks like a more hetro way of getting a piece of mx5'esque action to me! I think you have to be a certain age to want one, the younger generation are all "it's got no turbo" and the middle age'd bald guys are just glad they've got an option that doesn't require them to utter 'those' 2 letters & 1 number!

Looks nice but I'll wait for some sti replacement and I don't want rear wheel drive again, after being stuck too many time in my old BMW, snow and fields when I take the wife running.
I'm in mine for the power and 4wd that what tickles me, but at 25k it isn't a bad deal I have to say, but would I buy that instead of some other hot hatch varient mmmmmm jury's still out
Ted
I'd also like to see Subaru offer some bigger warenties 5 year 7 or even match vauxhalls imba 10 year
