Fans dont work (that can realistically be used within the space) if you fitted a mahoosive one then it might LOL

i fitted 2 280 cfm delta fans to my old setup topmount and with them running it made no difference whatsoever to the inlet temps stationary

to measure the charge temp really you dont want to mount it to anything metal, easiest way is just putting a hole in the silicone pipe with a smear of sealant, thats how ive done mine, hasnt leaked yet and ive took the ic off a couple of times,

rand b motorsport sell the kits, not cheap though

Been following this thread with interest, however, being new to turbo cars i don't really understand the whole theory!? Are you trying to keep it cool for performance gains only?

Yes and to protect the engine itself.

The turbo super heats the air its sucking in. its then blown through the intercooler to cool it prior to entering the throttle body and on into the engine. The cooler the air the more power can be made. If there air entering the engine gets to hot the car may suffer from detonation. the o/e ecu hears this and pulls timing from the car resulting in a power loss. If your running a non standard ecu it may not be clever enough to pull timing and det then continues which could result in a blow engine

thats simple terms. hope that helps

Does help, thanks for the explanation, got myself entered for my first sprint and a bit worried about this, the ECU is standard Z4, so will it be OK? What's the deal with a garden spray bottle of ice cold water? Where do i spray it, how much and when, just before start?
Sorry for the quiz??

It gets sprayed onto the fins of the intercooler (the top bit) which cools the warm metal which cools the air

And if it's sprints or any similar event check your power levels against your gearbox - if it's 5 speed check it's a 754 model up to 350bhp- 6 speed is essentially fine whatever but none of this is guaranteed- they aren't the easiest to launch unless you are brutal so that's your choice.

The wrc has a lot to answer for lol

Cool. where are you going for you first sprint? i have my first of the year on 18th March. As above full bore launches put loads of strain on the gearbox/clutch infact all the drive train. Be prepared to wear tyres and brakes etc out. I alway use a garden sprayer to keep the intercooerl as cool as possible, Although its not always practical.

Going to Silverstone on 31st March, planning on taking it a bit easy on the launches, more about fun than winning times, car is pretty standard so 280-300bhp, done a few trackdays and all OK, but take the first half lap easy. Just wanted to try something different.
So i guess i couldn't over use the water spray then?

Too much water and the marshalls may get emotional about fluid coming out of your car onto the track- so just try and avoid that.

Dont worry about power- get the brakes and tyres sorted and if you can get any driver training even better (I dont know what you are like, but we can all improve- its not a criticism!)

Keep us updated with how you go- must head off to garden centre now lol!
