thank you Ding
I was having a drink with a very old school friend of mine the other day, he is called Asim and his parents came over from Kenya in the late 50’s / early 60’s (we travelled India together for 6 months in 1984)
His father worked for London Transport as a ticket collector (not ticket inspector, a ticket collector) at Sheppard’s Bush underground station
He was a clever guy, and was able to apply that intelligence, drive and aspiration - and now is the senior partner in a firm of solicitors, employing 900 people (he has worked for them when the only had 40 employees) based in Manchester, they work with insurance co’s defending mendacious claims for whiplash etc
As we talked, we asked each other whether after 40 odd years, his success and ability to achieve what he has now (his two children go to Cheadle Hulme school so I suspect life won’t be as hard for them) is easier or harder for the sons of ticket collectors
I suspect they are harder – and i continually ask myself why
Interestingly, as you probably can guess he is a Muslim, back then I had no idea, as it never came up, was never relevant, (we drank, we smoked, we danced) how times change --- often for the worse

It's the rags to riches story so beloved by the aspirational middle classes or should I say the embourgeoised proletariat?
I guess there is a kind of guilt operating at some level for grabbing such a big piece of the pie and this is a way to neutralise that. The subject is obviously a 'worthy' person, so 'deserves' his 'success'.

To be honest, I'm unsure why people are getting so wound up. Yeah, ok, so Trout has become successful in life and he shares some of the material aspect of that on here....but I haven't really seen anything posted by him that outright looks down on people. And to me there is a difference between somebody who is proud of what they have (and have worked for) and those who do like to belittle others (imo there are a few that do this, naming nobody). Truthfully, alot of what is posted on here could be perceived as 'showing off' in some way, i.e. what mods they have done to cars/spent on them, race results and so on and that is just the car related part.
The thing is, there are alot of people on here all from different walks of life, all with different characters and that is what should make this a good place, not a bad one. Maybe we all need to lighten up a bit and accept our differences. Like I say, imo, there is a big difference beween somebody 'showing off' at best and those who offend and belittle (whether that be in terms of wealth and material possessions or in other ways).
I think it would be a sad day if we lose yet another long term member because some people maybe take him the wrong way.

I've met Trouty, and he's a very decent guy.

I'm sorry you got that impression, but I really don't think like that. I am often satirical or using parody or hyperbole sometimes when I write stuff. Normally I use a smilie to signify that.

Sorry to say that SN is not full of muppets but full of ***** who take great pleasure in lording it over the less fortunate who actually have to work for what they have instead of sitting behind a desk pushing a pen about shouting "YOUR FIRED"
Why anyone with a jumped up Volkswagon Beetle feels the need to be a member of a Subaru forum is beyond me, and then plaster the site with photo's of said Volkswagon Beetle in front of there mansion is just ***** waving of epic proportion.
I dont need to brag about how big my **** is or how much money I have or that I have more than 1 property unmortgaged or how many holidays I take a year or exactly what drugs I sell to achieve what I have.
Get a ****ing life and go bore someone else who really cares about how big your bank balance is, or which Volkswagon your now driving, somewhere like the girls off the only way is Essex as this is a Subaru forum FFS
SN has gone downhill and is just a glorified advertising board with adverts on every post its ridiculous

But, following on, the same can be said for those seen to be showing off. There is a good chance that that wasn't the intention. Just becasue someone is proud of what they have and they are showing it in an area that lends itself to that, doesn't mean they are rubbing people's noses in it so to speak. There are people on here that genuinely seem to look down on others less well off, in fairness, I wouldn't say Trout was one of them.

I did make a joke about him boasting, but I hope the smillie next to that let people know it was a joke. Maybe joking around on here doesn't go down too well anymore?
Maybe I should have expressed my deep love for him instead?

I hadn't seen that comment, but maybe similar in the past. This, I think, is one of the problems with the written word. Unless somebody makes it very obvious that they are joking, they can be taken the wrong way. If I have done that with you, then I'm sorry.

I've nothing against Trout really. I am not the one on here calling him a kunt or anything that was Mikej857.

I can't recall reading any of Trouts posts and thought he's coming across as a snob.If he owns a high value Porsche then nice for him.
This country boils my p1ss sometimes with its attitude and backward/negative thinking.

One thing I didn't realise until the other day though was that you are a Porsche owner.... I only mention it as it is interesting how some people talk about their possessions whereas others don't so much. Doesn't matter either way but interesting nonetheless.

PS As for owning a Porsche, not just any old Porsche but one of the finest ever made. I love it. I earned it myself and being a car forum I thought (rightly in many cases) people might want to share my joy of owing such a car. Indeed a number of people from here have been in it and some have driven it.
If you don't like it then take a look in the mirror and wonder what it is that makes you feel like a lesser person because someone else happens to enjoy owning a Porsche.

What I find incredible is that, in reality, “life” is so simple and consists of a few basic rules and principles - get those right and everything else (whatever that else is) falls into place.
And I am always amazed how hard people find it.
Be respectful and kind to everyone you meet. (whether that someone is working behind the till at a shop or the chairman of an investment bank), basically employ the art of empathy
Be positive, enthusiastic, willing to try and above all smile
and importantly concentrate on your own life not other peoples
I suspect the successful people on here (and I am not talking about bank balances) understand this too
