I have never considered a life as a scammer but I think I may well now go for a career change if it's that easy.

Not quite the same but when I sold my 205 GTI, the gentleman who bought it (or say swpped for another car and cash my way) was in Afghanistan. I did the deal after driving to his mates in Cambridge and it was 100% legit. It does happen but obviously the OPs cousin saw a bargain over common sense

£3k ouch, won't be that daft again

No sympathy to be honest. If you are dumb enough to fall for such an obvious scam then you deserve to get caught out. I just hope he doesn't do it again. As they say, once bitten twice shy.

I wonder how much feedback the guy had on ebay? I've been stung with a "new" ebayer before and luckily got my cash back (cheap PS3 controller).

If the deal looks too good to be true, it probably is!

the difference is with ebay you have some comeback with paypal and a second hand controller is only a few quid not £3000.

who in there right mind would buy a car without checking it over anyway, it may not start, be all dented etc..

Well he's not a rig anymore he's having a divorce.

This 2004 Volvo XC90 is in excellent condition with no issues. I'm asking £3000 for a fast sale. The car is currently located in Glasgow because I just finished the divorce with my wife and I have moved here. I will sell the car only using eBay's services, this way you'll get 3 days to inspect the car before paying me and I'll be sure that I have a genuine buyer that isn't going to mess me around. Where are you located? Please email me as soon as you see this message because I have few other people interested in this car.

Thank you,

Had a reply

I'm working on an oil rig so pick up is not possible but I can have the car delivered to you by a delivery company for free. Since I presume you aren't familiar with eBay's Purchase Program, I have briefly described the transaction's steps below:
*
1. Buyer, Seller reach an agreement (price and delivery conditions)
2. Buyer sends the money to eBay and they inform the seller that the payment was received.
3. Seller delivers the vehicle.
4. Buyer accepts delivery and informs eBay about the acceptance.
5. eBay releases the money to seller.
*
As you can see, you'll receive the car BEFORE any money is released to me. You'll get the chance to inspect it, test it and everything you like while your money is still safely held in eBay's account. ONLY after you confirm with eBay that you'll agree to keep the car, they'll release the money to me.
*
If for some reason, you won't keep the car (I assure you that is NOT going to happen since my car is in IMMACULATE condition inside and out) I will take it back on MY EXPENSE and eBay will send you your money back.
*
From the moment you receive the car you have 3 days to inspect it. If it's not like I said or something is not ok with it you can reject it and eBay will fully refund you and the car will be delivered back to me on my expense.
*
The car will be delivered directly to your requested address as soon as I will have the payment confirmation from eBay.
*
In order to go ahead with the sale I need your full name and address for delivery.
*

Yes I'm bored

As I said, pick up isn't possible because I'm working on an oil rig but I can arrange the delivery of the car for free... Please read my previous email and you will see that you'll get a chance to VIEW and TEST the car before any money is given to me... This way everybody is happy: I see that you are a serious buyer with money and NOT a time waster and you'll view/test the car before any money is given to me... Please decide quickly if you wish to buy it or not by the specified terms because I do have other people interested in the car. In order to go ahead with the sale I need your full name and address for delivery. Once the requested details will be provided, eBay will contact you with ALL the info regarding delivery, payment, purchase protection and refund policy so please provide your details before any other questions. You will find 90% of answers in the info eBay will send you.
Will wait to hear from you.
Thank you,

Sadly its just a matter of time before someone falls for this again and we don't really have any way of stopping him. Those letters are all the same as my cousin sent me 10 emails in total. You could ask for more pictures of the vehicle.

Ask him to send you £35 so you can HPI it. If it comes back clean. you'll add £35 to the price.

See if you can get some cash out of him.

Hi Ant
Just spoke to Nick he has just recieved this email he has the fraud squad on the case and they said yesterday a dutch lady had sent this guy £12000.
Date: Thu, 1 Mar 2012 23:57:16 +0200
Subject: Re: Volvo XC90
From: tmx1975@gmail.com
To:

Nick,
Sorry for the late reply but I had problems with the internet connection due to bad weather.
Just so you know, I didn't got the green light to deliver the car from ebay.
They said not to deliver the car because the money transfer you've sent was fraudulent and the money wasn't received by them.
You need to go back to your bank and ask them for a refund... you will get your money back without any problems.
I think I won't be able to complete the sale for the car with you because I got a little scared when I've heard about you sending a fraudulent money transfer...
Thank you for your time.

Nick replied to him with this

Hello "Joe" good to hear from you. Ebay know nothing about the transaction because the money went straight into your bank account it was not their "holding bank" as you implied.
When the fraud officers came here to look at my computer they told me that the number plates were false, as were the plates on the following volvo car you were selling the very next day.
Although that car was a year older it looked identical to the 55 plate that i " bought" from you.
While reporting you to the Met police yesterday for selling the same volvo car the operator informed me that she had spoken to a Dutch woman earlier who had deposited £12000.00 into
your Barclays account in Walthamstow so maybe she will be getting her money back aswell?
I look forward to receiving my money back in the morning then.
You know where I live, why not call round to see me I would love to meet you?
Nick
