Mission impossible.

If I had lost my son out there I would be heartbroken and very bitter that my son had been sacrificed in a doomed scenario. And I'd listen to the politicians and top military brass trying to put a spin on all our achievements and how training the Afghans will do the trick knowing that they know they are lying to save face

Please advise exactly what you mean by a strategic withdrawal.

What is the mission you mention? Is it to do away completely with the Taliban? Do you honestly believe that to be achievable, they have been in the country for over 30 years and are accepted by the people. They have strong ambitions for Afghanistan and Pakistan. What do you think are the chances of the locals in controlling the Taliban?

The Russian army was forced to withdraw as indeed we were in earlier times.

No, it's self-explanatory.

What is the mission you mention?
Again, it's been discussed, at length, both on here and across the world for many years. Go and look it up if you need a reminder.

Is it to do away completely with the Taliban?
No.

Do you honestly believe that to be achievable
No.

they have been in the country for 30 years
Literalist and puritanical Islamic theology of the flavour practiced by The Taliban has been influential in the region for more than a millennium.

and are accepted by the people
Amongst strong competition, this is the most absurd statement in the post.

They have strong ambitions for Afghanistan and Pakistan
And yet you ask what the mission is.

What do you think are the chances of the locals in controlling the Taliban?
I think they're increased significantly by allied forces continuing with its mission and seriously harmed by an immediate withdrawal.

The Russian army was forced to withdraw as indeed we were in earlier times.
This doesn't preclude the necessity of the action or act as a predictor of its outcome.
