I would have thought it was common decency and understanding.

Its not all about money, its about being sensible. If the buyer doesn't want to pay then he can just mutually agree not buy it, that way nobody is out of pocket for anything. IMO good people shouldn't take advantage of someone's mistake.

No, it is about money. If he wanted to pay the going rate, then the buyer would bought the books from a shop. Ebay provides the oppotunity to buy at discounted rates, especially if the goods are second hand.

I also find it ironic how you talk about common decency and understanding when you clearly condone 'shill bidding'. If you think about what you are doing, i.e. deliberately and falsly increasing the value on an item, to force others to also increase their own bids, how can you possibly think that is ok?

I didn't force anyone to buy anything. Nor would I expect them to buy it, had that occured (I actually had it happen with another item bought in error, I let them off).

I normally just start the item at the minimum price I'm willing to accept, and make sure I price up postage beforehand so it is spelled out in the listing. The starting price pushes up the listing cost a bit, but it's a bit cheaper than reserve fees. If you have something you want at least £50 for, starting the auction at £50 costs £1, but starting at 99p with a £50 reserve costs £2.50.

You should always split postage out because you don't pay final value fees on it. If you bundle it in with the price of the item you end up paying 10% of it to the grasping b******ds at ebay.

I put the postage as free, I presumed incorrectly that they would accept it, as the box came to me via a courier (rc helicopter) ages ago, it seems not though.

As scud8 said I also use the starting bid as the min i will take really hate reserves, that way the first bid you get you know you got the min you want and hopefully it will increase to a decent price!!

Just don't send it if you're worried about the money as you don't know the bloke from Adam. What should you care.
It's not really the done thing but really does it matter.
If he wants to get bent about it then just ignore him. I'm sure he'll go away in the end.

Right. Have you told the bloke that your books are precious enough to go for 200 quid, and even if he paid 38 quid for the postage, he is saving himself mega bucks? ? I suppose he himself knows it, but he is acting a penny pincher, and you are also better off sticking to business ethics. Anyway, his rejection gives you an upper hand to leave him a neutral or nasty feedback, which you don't have to leave- if you don't want to.

if hes willing to chip in with the postage ile send it via royal fail.

James
Why would you bother with that, now?? If the buyer has rejected the postage cost, what can you do? You can't launch books in the air to get to his London address, can you? His rejection to paying postage means he has pulled out. That should give you a right to re-list the books, anyway? Just remember to stick the Reserve on this time, and declare £38.00 postage within the UK on the listing.

By the way, Ebay is sh!te for selling or buying books. You should try selling your books on Amazon or abc.

my father told me that you either get paid in experience or money

if you don't get cash, then learn from your experience and you are still quids in, in the long run

my first Ebay deal was disaster, and I had to send an additional item becuase my description was not clear enough

my fault -- but I have learnt from it and have never made the same mistake again

Well, I have learnt so much from my mistakes that I will soon make another one.

In all seriousness, I bought an "original" Subaru jacket from there, which turned out to be fake. It was when I was an Ebay newb in 2001. Never again I shall trust a brand clothing from there.
