Well we have one opening up at the end of this month in our town. TBH it is not a bad thing as some of their stuff is great value ( always the place to go when we are over in Portugal) and they have converted an old disused car park.
Still it is located in the **** area of town which is no surprise
Not a snob, I still will shop in Sainsburys as they have some great food but it would be foolish not to grab some bargains even if the 'clientele' is somewhat suspect

Great product and good value! I've just eaten a bar Fin Carre whole nut chocolate that cost half as much as a Cadbury equivalent and tastes twice as good. Apart from the fact that one has to rub shoulders with poor people and foreigners, is there a reason not to shop there? What's the catch?

The victor is the one who gets the most and gives the least, if you manage to get a girlfriend who is used to having designer dresses and Tiffany jewelery given to her by previous boyfriends with out any such luxuries apart from a couple of nice dinners then you have a victory. The longer you maintain the relationship with no increased expenditure over the usual, especially if you can get them to cook and clean for you, represents a win. If you bang the village bike and have to buy her a vodka and coke then you have lost that deal beacuse she has banged half the village already and they probably diddn't even shell out for a bag of walkers crisps.

What's "ours"? The jams have a higher fruit content, the muesli has more nuts and less rabbit food and the über-yummy bourguinon pies have more beef than the Sainsbury's equivalent and for less money. And should anyone wish to host a celebration look no further than their Comte de Brismand champagne......£12.99 and whilst not as sophisticated as, say, a '96 DP, it'd embarrass the likes of M&C and Lanson in a blind test. Smart people shop at Lidl. 
I also like their fruit yoghurt and various continental cheese and meat that isnt common here.

Lot of psychology with supermarkets it seems, it does indicate that some are judging their own self worth and place in society based on shopping choices, some even seem to think that their chances to breed may be affected by their choice of supermarket.
The truth is not many people are completely immune to the current economic climate and prices but even less people are immune to portraying an image of wealth through their choices, some seem terrified that someone may see them as poor due to having an Android Phone versus an Iphone, some seem terrified of being seem in a car with the wrong badge on, mys sister in law rejected a Galaxy over a Sharan as it had a VW badge on despite it being EXACTLY the same basic product, in fact the Ford was cheaper and better equipped.
The boom years seem to have fostered a generation of people with a taste for the finer things in life but also a taste for showing others how discerning they are, nobody is totally immune to it but I am probably less afected than most, perhaps even a bit of an inverted snob sometimes but I do try to weigh up my motivations and decide whether they are for my benefit/enjoyment or is it to derive enjoyment by showing off.
I freely admit that I have to watch the money, not that much these days but I am not immune and dont like to feel ripped off which I do every time I go to the local Sainsbury's really, £150 for a not that extravagent shop is a lot of money, I even include the value stuff, another thing people get sniffy about, some think they will be excommunicated from society for not having all branded food, I tend to try stuff and if I like it, buy it again, regardless of the label.

J4cko good post but you won't see me in a shop these days, to me a man who goes shopping for either clothes or food needs to slap his GF/wife and tell her not to be such a lazy bitch*. Also only millionaires can afford to do all their shopping in M&S, its properly ****ing expensive.

A while back an Aldi opened in a posh town near me,the local residents were on the war path including the elderly because of it,we can't have an Aldi in our town.About 6 to 8 months later it closed down and is still empty now,
funny thing is the town have a Wilkinson and Halfords,Mc Donalds,but the line stopped at an Aldi...
They don't have a tesco but have M&S Waitrose and Sainsbury's
Personally i couldn't give a **** where people shop,i don't go into aldi or the like myself but in the past been in netto to check out the foreign drink.
Quite content with Morrisons and yes i have shopped in M&S recently to buy a birthday cake.

Aldi do some wicked stubby bottles of French beer. Cheap as chips, and it's not the watered down pi$$ they sell at Asda!
I don't suppose it's the best tasting, but it's not bad at all. Perfect for a weekend drink in the garden in the summer

THis is why you should never shop at lidl.
I once gave a hot former lapdancer a job in my bar and one night she got a friend to come help out , the friend was stunning, from EE somewhere and clearly a lap dancer but told me some other made up job. the EE girl gave me her number clearly impressed by my sharp suits and percieved social status. So a few days later in a random moment I decided to check out the local lidl as I sometimes did and low an behold the EE girl was there with her sister and once she saw me I got an instant look of shock, horror then pity as I could visibly see her mentally down grading me from potential sexual partner to broke fool who has to shop at lidl. No girl gets moist from a man who shops at lidl.

What's the story with their Granarom Highland Gold Coffee? So much cheaper than popular brands and yet it tastes really good. The aroma is a little 'burnt', but otherwise it's a winner! Anyone else sensible enough to have tried this?

I use Aldi a lot - its cheap and saves me money. Not bothered who shops there, foreign or poor etc. As long as it saves me a few pennies then that's ok with me.

I get my washing up liquid, dishwasher stuff, showel gel, etc there. Always decent vfm. Somehow, Cirencester, with a population of 19000, can now support a Waitrose, Tesco Extra, Tesco, Tesco Metro, M&S, Morrison Metro, Aldi, Lidl and a Poundland for good measure. It's nice having the choice and the jobs, but it just turns another market town into an A.N.Other generic UK town.

I use Lidl a bit partly because it reminds me of shopping abroad and partly because some of their stuff is genuinely superior to the "others" - they do a great own brand beer, some good red wines (not white for some reason), their breads and patisserie stuff is excellent as is their fresh produce. It's not as "safe" as shopping at the big names places because stock varies but I always come out thinking "is that ALL I just paid?!"
It's a simpler business model - much clearer; they buy cheap, and make mark up.
The big four/five are now paying the price for shi77ing all over their suppliers with complicated "shelf space" payments and enormous claims if anything doesn't go their way.
I've supplied both in the past - Lidl always paid on time and never faffed about. The others (except Waitress for some reason) constantly picked, whined, claimed and generally acted like spoilt kids. They are a HUGE market if you can supply them but they are incredibly ruthless, whatever their ads might say about them.
