i still have a spectrum 48k and a boat load of games.
Fired it up a while back and forgot how steep a learning curve the games are. A lot of time spent wondering what the f*ck you're supposed to be doing. If you can get a game to load. Real test of patience.
Good memories tho. lol

Us cool kids had C64's, was the paupers and gimps that had Spectrums the freaks (well a freak, there was only one) had a Dragon 32, the posh kids had BBC's, the kids whose parents liked the idea of the BBC and its educational aspirations but couldn't run to £399 bought a the poor sad little ****ers an Acorn Electron, a BBC shorn of most of the good stuff.
The C64 was just better in pretty much every way, it made decent sounds, it had much better graphics and all the cool US games.
That said, I did have a massive fondness for the Spectrum, there were some classic games, used to go to my mates for a game of TLL or Jet Set *****, but I bought my own eventually as I saved up and fancied having one at my disposal.
They both as machines had unique characters, the C64 was brash, noisy and seemed slightly exotic, by that I mean the US games really seemed different and exciting, the Spectrum was very British, cozy and the games were very playable and imaginative,
I loved the magazines, Crash and Zzap, waiting for the latest games and scuttling off to buy them with my birthday money, the excitement of hearing a game that had speech in it
I dotn think the 360 or PS3 will ever illicit such fondness and fierce loyalty.

Very fond memories as well
There are some rather good emulators out there, so you can still indulge your nostalgia. I happened upon the text adventure "Scoop" which I had played at school, badly, and found there was a speccy version, so I loaded it up and had a play and was able to get through more of it than I could at school. Ended up writing a solution for it too.
Must grab a copy of the latest emulator and have a play of Dan Dare.
