If you lot think it's depressing to see these kind of errors being made on a car forum, imagine how university lecturers feel when they see the same, if not worse, errors being made in undergraduate submissions!

I can fully understand people getting annoyed at text talk as it is hard to understand.
But if somebody makes the odd spelling mistake I dont see the harm in it as it is not been done to offend anybody.
Not everyone has excellent spelling skills and if they are trying their best to spell well at least they are trying.

I expect most browsers offer this support now.

Suggesting a spell checker for brought vs bought won't work as they are both correctly spelt words - same as lose vs loose.
Some of us will remember the Grand Master, de Banke, and his use of "bare" and "bear". "Bare with me" always made me smile.
I have a spell check on my Google toolbar although it will try to Americanise English words.

As long as a post isn't fully written I can almost ignore the txt speak but as per my other post on this thread, going into General and finding someone asking about brakes or similar is impossible to ignore!

Ah the brought vs bought saga
My wife and I have a groundhog day once a month, it goes like this
Wife: "I brought a new pair of shoes today!"
Me: "Where did you bring them from?"
Wife "**** off"

I hate this as well, they are two different words,
Bought = Purchased
Brought = Arrived with something
One letter different but a world of difference in meaning, I know language evolves but this is just wrong, no need for it to evolvem the existing meanings work fine if you care to use them as such, I think it is an affectation almost, like the immortal "Can I get" used in place of "Could I have", I went on a course and this chimp from Leicester latched onto me and he heard some London types using it, within two days he had started doing it.
Affect and Effect seem to be used interchangably as well.
My mothe in law makes little quips about my diction sometimes, I think it is slight disgust at me being a bit working class, I do make and effort but I will occasionally drop the odd H or say "Mate" to a mate when on the phone, I put up with it (doesnt happen that often nowadays) but she just makes words up, splices two together and gets it totally wrong sometimes but I never say anything, whats the point, as we know picking someone up on grammar genernally just makes you look a bit of a *****.
