And to add, i was glad to see on Junior Apprentice that Alan made quite a big thing of the atrocious spelling in the student cookbook, even though he acknowledges he's not great himself. But one of the girls said she was too busy to check, another said she was dyslexic, and the third just cocked her head with a "well i just can't spell" as if that was alright then. How can you not know how to spell potatoes? What actually goes on in schools these days??

The other day we even had "And breath". Didn't even know the difference between a breath and to breathe.

For me it's an absolute eyesore. Most of the people who make these errors have never read a book in their lives and have no education beyond life experience. It saddens me. But in a world where "being understood" is apparently more important than the accuracy of the means of doing so, properly written English is on a one-way road to decimation. I'm glad I* was taught properly, that's all I* can say.

* because I* can't be bothered to go through all that again.
Ah, here you are! Good morning to you and all, man.

I agree with you. Most people don't want to learn at all.

Do you think it could be to do with the educational initiative at early schools (I think it came in 1980's? ) that English in Primary education would be taught phonetically and creatively, rather than with strict rules on correct spelling and grammar? The problem is that English is not always written in the same way as it is spoken.

Even now, a lot of kids as old as 10-11 years of age denote C as curly k (k spoken as ka). I'd rather the spellings and grammar taught by rules (and a hit of the ruler on the hand, if required ) but I think the primary schools encourage kids to write the way they speak. With that, I can write 'speak' as 'speek', which will be a disaster to you, and utterly embarrassing to me. So, if the base for English is built like that, I can see why so many adults don't take correct spellings and grammar seriously. I know an adult who writes and speaks 'grammar' word as 'grandma', as he is stuck in his primary phonetic learning mode. This explains to me why someone once wrote ‘ought’ as ‘ort’, and you went ballistic at it.

The thing is Tel, I notice every thread discrepancy all of the time, as I'm sure you do too. I also know the difference between a thick fûcker and a typo, allowing for discretion.

I despair on a daily basis the lack of basic education displayed everywhere, not just on SN. Keeping quiet about it here means my pìss doesn't quite boil or I'd spend my online time constantly correcting the dim that don't care anyway. Self respect isn't an issue for these individuals if communication of a sorts is achieved.

I even think if someone typed out a plea to call the emergency services, desperate for help, and the spelling was bad, I'd ignore them.

Dimlows have always been around. I just think they've had more children than the rest and so 'thickitus' has spread over generations faster than any other disease.

Girlfriends English is quite colonial, she doesn't get the subtle "wit" we've grown up with, she doesn't get anything out of QI for example,( its not intelligence, she has 2 degrees ) - sometimes I'm even finding myself embarrassed on her behalf
We're not straight down the middle like the yanks - films culture she appreciates, hasnt been there however.
I think language is changing here, and also some folks are too lazy to write properly

Well, it will be nice to see people spell correctly. At least simple words. A person here once asked me- "where you a hippy in past life? ". I nearly answered him- "Where?? Here, there, anywhere, somewhere or is it behind you or something?? ". But I didn't mock his lack of education. Instead, with my abundance of education and reasoning abilities, it was dead easy for me to work out what he meant. He meant 'were', not 'where'. So, I satisfied his query by answering that I was a proper ethnic; not some plastic, wannabe one.

To conclude, I'm not really that bothered about people's poor spellings here. I mean, it will be too cocky of me with the second lingo English giving it large to the native English speakers. I'd rather they make even more mistakes! Their mistakes would make me look more intelligent and educated than them, so hey, no complaints here.

I run online businesses, a lot of communication is by email.
The use of text speak, poor spelling and bad grammar leaves a lot to be desired.

What does make my old blood boil is non-capitalisation of a house address.
I copy and paste addresses into the software for my label maker and I will not do it until I have corrected the grammar because if I don't I think it reflects on my business.

It's the way I was educated and the way my parents brought me up.

Not just the academic achievements but it’s the common sense polished with more experience and the ability to enter the natives' frames of references that make someone more efficient in 'getting' things. It could be that the foundation of her own internal institution are too rigid, which refrains her from entering others' references. Anyway, I’m off the track here. Sorry.

I also add ironically that the reason why I don't care that much because it makes me look better than them.

Did he mean something different? If so, sorry, I think I'm doing Duncan's GF here.

I always thought the phrase was "Couldn't care less", the other way implies that they do actually care?! (Have I just been suckered like a proper numptie? )

Bristol98, this whole thing is crazy. "I couldn't care less" is not caring at all, you are right. But "I could care less personally" with is ambiguous. What is this supposed to mean, hm?? That > could put his post into a reverse gear. That is nothing to do with English, but that has something to do with the online emoticons use. You don't know what he's trying to bleddy say, do you?? Does he care, does he not care, does he care a teeny-weeny bit or does he care too much like Telboy, because he has nowt else better to do or what?

Basically, I reckon ReallyReallyGoodMeat doesn't really, really know whether he really, really cares or not.

The was to denote the wrongness of the phrase, clearly it didn't work!

It's another one of those infuriating wrongisms that's gradually making its way into our language, largely thanks to the Americans not understanding our phrase, blemss 'em.

Literally it would mean to care at some level, which in itself means nothing, when what they mean to say is that they couldn't care less.

PMSL @ 'sikth' I can understand that people may not be able to speak as well due to their accents, speech impediments etc. Like I can never speak the word 'vehicle' properly. My kids cry with laughter when I speak the word 'vehicle'. They ask me again and again to speak it, and double themselves giggling - cheeky monkeys! Anyway, people can write better, at least. But then again, they shouldn't. They need to make me look better than them. So, I'm thankful to them.

BTW, I have once again gone back to correct the post that you laughed at. You laughed, but Tel would have flipped his lid!

Ah, good point, RRGM.

Is it the Black American English that is replacing literalism with litterism and wrongism? Sorry, I don't mean to perform any blackism here, but I am just curious. It could be the white American English that is faulty. I don't know.
