What are you talking about?? As Steve says when the contract is up you get a new phone for 'free'. So assuming you are on a monthly contract then why wouldn't you get whatever is the latest/best offering?

If you have a phone already that does everything you need why would you renew a £35+ monthly contract just for the latest model when you could get the same minutes and data on sim only for a tenner a month and keep using your perfectly good phone? Tesco (o2 network) sim only deal I got my Son gives him the same minutes and data I have on a £35 per month contract with o2 hence that's where i'm going at contract renewal time. I have a good phone, it does what I need so the latest model really isn't of interest.

I'm referring to numpties that have to constantly upgrade to the latest model when there is minimal improvements over the phone they already have. i.e those that have to go from an iphone 4 to 4s or Galaxy S2 to S3 etc. What is the point other than to always be paying an expensive contract just to have the latest model.

Smart phones have got to such a high standard that newer models just don't offer that much of an upgrade, really what is so great about the S3 over the S2? Eye tracking? Is that really worth upgrading for with a slightly better processor and slight increase on camera megapixels? I bet in everyday use there would be hardly any noticeable difference.

I totally agree with this motion. One of the main reasons why mobile phone makers are bringing out a new model every 12 months, is because there are so many consumers out there who will feed their desires to have the latest model.

Well I'll fess up and say I didn't know that.

I didn't realise that I could get the same minutes/data for that much less money, I thought all the options came out at about the same money ie £35-£40 a month.

I don't feel the need to upgrade for every incremental improvement in phones, some of which will be just marketing anyway. But I saw it as a 'free' upgrade, but if I can get the same service for £10/month then it is not free, I'm paying £25/month for the pleasure.

I will look into a sim only contract then, thanks

I will be keeping my iPhone 4 when the contract ends in July. I pay £25 a month for 600 minutes which I don't use but hope to go SIM only for about £10 a month.

I usually search Quidco for deals and they are much better than mobile shops or Voda/Orange/O2 websites, both in the upfront and monthly costs and with cashback.

I would like a new Android with bigger screen but it doesn't bother me enough to pay £15 extra a month, or probably more like £20-25 extra.

I wouldn't upgrade a SGS2 or even HTC Desire either I don't think.

No probs and my whinge wasn't aimed at you as the OP, just a general point about how much people pay for a new phone as it is never free no matter how good the deal might appear.

Best place along with what John has pointed out for finding sim deals is hotukdeals as anything worth having always goes hot on there. The Tesco sim only deal at a tenner normally gets released once or twice a year and from my memory I think it has come up at around June time before so i'm keeping an eye out for it as my contract finishes in July. However there are always the other providers doing good deals throughout the year if you don't fancy Tesco mobile.

I had a Galaxy S and then got a Galaxy Nexus, no plans on changing for quite some time as it now does everything I need, plus I have a HP Touchpad running Android for things that require a larger screen

Well I've had a 3GS an iPhone 4 a galaxy s2 (the s2 replaced the 4 as my works phone, the 4 is now in a drawer ready for my mate as he wants to upgrade his 3GS, both of these are works provided phones) but as my 3GS is over due to be changed, the S3 will be replacing it
The more you get into android handsets the more you understand what you have been missing, total customisation, and with windows 8OS available later this year for the S3, could be interesting

I'm on giffgaff 250 mins, unlimited texts and unlimited internet for ten quid a month.
Really can't see myself bothering to upgrade to the s3, I'm happy with the s2 so will probably hang on to that until it goes to the phone shop in the sky.

What's giffgaff like? I'm not sure I need more than 250 mins and would prefer the unlimited data if the network is good service. Is it truely unlimited or capped once you hit a certain amount? Would come in handy for tethering a laptop when travelling (wifi hotspot).

It's unlimited as long as you do not tether, whether they can actually tell if you are tethering or not is another matter. It also depends how good the 02 signal is in your area as they piggyback off that. Fortunately for me o2 have masts on our works land so I can get speed of up to 6meg.

Thanks, yep i'm on o2 currently with good signal. I won't be tethering regularly, will just use wifi hotspot on my phone if I need to look something up on my laptop/ipad whilst travelling. I do that currently with my o2 contract data and they have never picked up on it.

I'm with you on that, I've never upgraded unless the phone died or I lost it, the only reason I bought a Desire 2 years ago was because I started a new job and they required me to have a smarty, and I bought that because at the time it was a better spec than the current Apple. Admitedly it did take 2 weeks to get used to having no buttons .

It's the "must have the latest, look at me" culture that society has these days that makes people go for the latest spec phone and it's the realy sad geeks that camp out over night to get it on release day.

They want to be the first to have the new phone to show everyone how cool they are.......but yet they fail to see how completely idiotic they look camping outside a shop for a piece of plastic.

Spoke to O2 to ask where mine was I was told there seems to be a shortage - especially of the blue ones ! Probably get it around the middle of the month.

I agree with you, but it sometimes can be made to almost work. An S2 in good condition will fetch around £250+, that is half of an 18 month contract paid off already or another way to look at it, £15 a month, based of £30 a month contract.

The rest of the money can be attributed purely to having the best phone on the market, there are worse ways to waste money imo

From what i've heard there's trouble with the blue finish so some have been recalled, not really checked mind.

I bought my gn as i didn't want to be stung with a contract, there was very little between buying the phone and going sim free, or paying for the thing over a lengthy contract anyway.

Three network has the best sim free deals ime.

I notice most of these deals are on a one year contract. The problem I see is if I take out one of these deals and the next day my S2 breaks/fails what do I do? A new (or second hand) smart phone will cost me £250+. So any savings I would have made will be swallowed up by this cost.

Of course the phone may not fail, so it is a calculated risk I suppose. But if I go for a new 02 contract then at least the new phone has a one year warranty and I have my old s2 as a back up should I lose the new one.

Also, is the coverage etc with Tesco exactly the same as 02?

Don't you get free phone insurance through your bank Ding? As this would cover it against damage, failing etc

I've used my bank insurance for my phones for about three years now.
