I reckon the Empire review has summed it up pretty much bang on for once here:
(stick with it it it's lengthy read for the internet generation but I think it sums it all up well in the end)

P1 Fanatic - as you say, Vickers isn't an android. The surgery pod only working for males is for Weyland - although if it was that good why can it only do one or the other - that was a bit silly.
One thing that does get me is if you hadn't seen the viral you would have no idea why Guy Pearce is made to look old. Why not use someone old from the start. I would use the viral as the start of the 2nd film to provide an explanation to the masses (another reason why some believe the 2nd film may not be too long - maybe before the Blade Runner film but certainly after)

How did David know that he was going to impregnate Shaw that very evening i.e. before it had a chance to take over his body? Maybe he knows humans too well and after a plying Holloway with a few bottles of champers it was inevitable. If only it worked that way – get the male plastered and the women puts out

Yeah that’s what I meant – if the pod was so hi tech surely it would be able to operate on both sexes?
I haven’t seen the viral and tbh didn’t even know it was Pearce playing Weyland til I checked the cast on IMDB when I got home.

I think the pod scene would have been better with some sort of "Recalibrating for female" line or something. I suspect avoiding the use of the word abortion in a film so close to the story of god probably didn't sit very well (The theory that Jesus was a human looking engineer and we killed him hence our creators wanting to kill us)

And for the geeks – can anyone tell me at what point does Weyland Corp become Weyland-Yutani Corp? In AVP:R it ended with a Ms. Yutani collecting the predators weapon from the US Military but I don’t recall any specific reference to the Yutani side of things in any of the 4 Alien films. Admittedly I haven’t watched them for a while.
2005 – November
After months of litigation, Weyland Industries stocks sink further. Weyland Industries accepts a merger offer from the Japanese Yutani Corporation. Weyland Yutani Corporation (spelled Weylan Yutani in some territories) is born.

That doesn't flow though as its still just Weyland Corp in Prometheus which was 2083. And that site has info gleaned from Predator and Predator 2 so I am not sure how accurate. The AVP films just mess things up even more.

Yes it is, it just doesn't have THE alien. In all other respects that's exactly what it is. It even has the "you can't come in because you're contaminated" bit. There are so many nods to Alien it stopped being funny about halfway in. And the comments about it being an "Alien" film always called it a prequel, which is exactly what it is.

So why couldn't they edit the film properly in the first place so you didn't need to buy an extended edition to make sense of it all? It's a very obvious why to cash in on people having to buy the DVD.

You honestly think that some extended directors cut version is going to answer all these questions? I like the fact we have something to talk about days after watching it unlike most of the 1 watch crap that is churned out these days.
Anyone else think the engineer at the start has a resemblance of I Robot about them

This is normally down to the studio thinking the film is too long for most people to sit through, IIRC Titanic was the longest film ever to be shown in the cinema at nearly 3 hours.

Many films are much better longer. Scott's 'Kingdom of Heaven' was quite dire at the cinema, but with 45 mins restored on DVD the story made more sense, and characters had more depth. Aliens Directors Cut is way better than the cinema release too. Often they are cut to suit Americans short attention spans, but in reality it's to do with getting as many scheduled showings per day at the cinemas, plus double-dip DVD/BD sales for the multiple version releases later. Scott has already said that 27 mins was cut from Prometheus, but it was he that cut it to ensure good pacing and get rid of unnecessary filler that slowed the story and added nothing. He insists that the version on screens now IS the directors cut, as HE cut it. Of course, that doesn't rule out a later 'extended cut', or even an 'extended directors cut' should they wave a nice cheque in front of him if they think a million more DVD sales are on the horizon.

Even that is a minnow compared to some, but could you be bothered?

I could not care less if the film has no sequel, no answers or even if my ideas of what was meant by the film are right or wrong, what does matter to me is that the film got me thinking, it hit my imagination button quite hard and for that reason I loved it.

Just watched this and thought it was a bit pants, the holographic recordings was about all i liked..
Didn't like Charlize theron in this movie, could of played a better part in it.Not enough action i thought,or the right kind of action for this movie..
I'd give it 4 out of 10

I thought i was gonna get shot down for not not liking it.Nah i'm quite a big sci fi fan,but this just didn't do it for me,to be honest,i couldn't wait for it to end.And as for the 2nd movie, well i could take it or leave it,if the 1st movie is anything to go by.I thought Pandorum was a better movie than this. Looks for bullet proof vest

Watched it in 3D, didn't enjoy at all and left with the confirmation that it's just an attempt to set the scene for a follow on movie.
One to miss, and I'm a big Alien/Aliens fan.

Have to agree with much of what's been said here.
It was technically very accomplished and many of the cast were excellent, but I emerged from the cinema thinking "AND?!?" I'm certainly not an Alien fanboy, but this film -for me- just didn't seem to add up, almost like it wasn't sure whether it was a stand alone film or part of the alien story! Consequently, it did neither very well! In fact the whole point of it (as mentioned above) seemed to be to set up a sequel!
A mate summed it up very well by saying that it was a competent example of a genre rather than genre defining, which is more what one expects from Ridley Scott.

We I watched it at the weekend and thought it was good and enjoyed it. Sure there are plot holes and inconsistencies, but I went in with low expectations after reading this thread.
