i can't beleive the amount of hatchbacks in this survey !!!
.
my first propper car was a hillman Avenger 1.2 (1.25) super .
i loved it and fitted some big ford wheels , and hand painted the bottom half into two tone.
did about 40K miles in it too , went everywhere for several years, you dont ever see them now. was pretty reliable too , followed by about six motorbikes.
before the avenger i had a beetle that rusted faster than i could fix it , followed by a verymuch raced/rallied (not by me) ford escort mk1 mexico that i was fixing up (took ages) but ended up selling before it got finished (ata profit, i might add) they both never made it back onto the road. i was a naive buyer then. happy days.

This thread has got me thinking. It's 30 years next month since i passed my driving test & i have only ever had 7 cars in that time. All red bar one which was a blue ford orion lol.
Still loving my wagon of course which i have owned since new [12+ years now] & it's had it's 26th service today. Thanks Alyn [ASP performance]

I would have to scan the only picture I have of the old boy, so I found this replica.
It must have been at least 12 years old when I got it and I remember having to put stones in the boot in the winter to stop the rear end sliding everywhere. It was a great fun car and I passed my driving test in it. Sadly it got stolen and when I got it back it was stripped bare and I never drove it again after that. It is probably a little square in some scrapyard now

LOL - I was given an old (even then) Austin Maxi 1750 in Mustard by my uncle which had comprehensively failed its MOT. I had it way before I could drive, but that car tought me a lot of stuff (like how to creatively use body filler!), but also a pretty good grounding in car mechanics,
I passed my test in 1987 in my Mum & Dads brand new Seat Ibiza (system porsche don't you know) it was one of the first Seat's in the country, no-one had ever seen or heard of them! (my dad hocked in his MG Midget for that Seat! - I was proper gutted!)
My Maxi was great but embarrasingly shortly after passing my test it was T Boned by a Capri at a set of Traffic Lights (my fault lol). After using the Seat where I could I was by then working & earning a fairly ok wage (still living at home)and bought myself with my own money (and a friendly bank manager)one of these beauties..... a secondhand Isuzu Piazza Turbo.... exactly same as this pic.
I polished that car every goddamn day.... still think of it now. Even now I think its a sweet car, I was 18! It was 1988. I was the mutts nuts in that. I had a white one a couple of years afterwards which was a Lotus Piazza, way way better handling but sadly rusty and mega mileage! I never did re-capture the glory days of my red Piazza.
My red one was sold to fund a round the world back-packing trip.... it was a top car (and a top world trip!)
Seem to remember the insurance was £250! the girl behind the counter thought I was insane!! I feel for young drivers now... wish I had the same level of disposable income now too

Not my first car but I did have one of these brand new. 1989 F £8k it cost me, do you remember how much yours was? I had to have valve stem oil seal replaced after a couple of months and didn't keep it that long as I traded it for an XR4x4.

Not the one I had but very similar, mine was a 78
