Tony: both cars I looked at were at Fords of Winsford. One was merely OK, the other was a mess. Not sure of the previous owners, but one car had been on the gravel, no doubt.

There seems to be a huge difference in second hand values: how can one dealership advertise a FRP for £17K, when the one down the road advertises a similar car in age and mileage for £12995? As a couple of you have suggested, are the cheaper models ex lease cars/Ford press or demo cars that have had plenty of pain, and filtered down through the auction houses? Maybe.

Seems they have not been a big hit as a seller. I have only ever seen one car on the road in over 2 years, and we live not far from Wilmslow, a place where the rich endulge in fancy and different motors just to be seen in. (I am not one of 'em). Have all 1000 been sold? I fancy that there are still a few new 'uns lying around in a dark shed or muddy field somewhere?

In any case, I would not really like to spend more than 13k on a FRP, certainly not for a shagged out example that has been thrashed to within an inch of its life. WOuld rather spend 8k on a nice, standard 1.7. Going to keep an eye on prices, I reckon there is a little more depreciating to do before prices start to level out.

And I have just thrashed the old Pug home up the lanes, and am wearing a bloody huge smile. Far more fun than an Impreza, for less money than a Prodrive Performance Pack. A cheap FRP would cost 8 times more than I paid for my 1.9 GTi last year. Would it be 8 times more fun? I doubt it..

Forgot to post this link yesterday, its got loads of reviews on the FRP, EVO, Whatcar, Autoexpress,...etc.

Whatever FRP you go to look at, go for a long test drive, get the brakes hot, try and start the car from hot a couple of times and try reversing on full lock.

The final figure of FRP's is something like 505, these were all made and sold by 23/12/00

Olly,

All 1000 haven't been sold. IIRC, they only made 350 as the cost was too much to strip them down and rebuild them. I was very tempted with one (after my standard Puma), but 23k on a FRP, or 21k on a Scoob....hmmmmmm

Still love the look of them though

Sorry, they made more than 350, the final number was 505 give or take a few.

Insurance group 15 Vs 20 (Scooby)
Mile per gallon 35 Vs 15 (Scooby)

hmmmmm.

I wasn't far off then

Looks wise, I would take the FRP I think

Performance wise, I would take the Scoob

Personally, I think they would have sold more, had they not been such a high price to start with

I'd still have one though if the price was right

(Not dissing the FRP, cos I like them and my missus has my old Puma which is still a top car )

Just bought an FRP pxd my subaru impreza turbo 4 it!!!!!
The FRP is superb on handling & braking, this makes up for the drop in performance ive bin used to in my scooby. I paid 15k for mine with not a mark on it. As people were saying earlier it is an ex-ford car but had it inspected, been told my car in general is as new this with 14k on the clock. if u can live with the lack of power i totally recommend getting1! good luck

Gulp! Seems like prices are coming down by the week: a few on Autotrader site at a price beginning with 12.

The car you mentioned above isn't actually a Tickford built Racing Puma, there for it will not have individual numbering. and in the long term worth less i would imagine.

The car was built by Tony at Pumaspeed using all new parts from ford racing, he was after £15995 for it but has dropped it cos it hasn't sold below is the ad on his website www.pumaspeed.co.uk

2001 (Unregistered) Racing Puma Brand new never damaged
in immac racing blue, full spec,full brand new build by ourselves using all new ford motorsport parts,zero miles, wide track,17inch wheels,air con, 155 BHP £15995 ovno

All said the guy does have a very good reputation with Pumas and the car is probably better built than the Tickford ones!!

No wonder its cheap.

Having said that, I wouldn't want to buy all the bits from Ford Racing, convert and build the car (including repaint etc) for £13995.

And I wouldn't want to falsely advertise the car as a FRP Even if it's made up of the same bits it isn't technically a FRP, misrepresentation and illegal I should think.

But he isn't trying to conceal it's background - passing it off as one of the 500 probably would be illegal. As far as i know you can't copyright a car name, therefore i believe i could legally call or advertise my Scoob as a Ford Racing Puma if i so desired...

Well, sort of. He doesn't actually say "one of 500 made". That really would be a lay-up for a libel lawyer. Saying there were 500 made isn't actually false...!
