If you cut through the paint and saw a cross section of it you would see the slightly uneven, wavy lacquer. When you wet sand it you are taking off as little lacquer as possible while taking off as much of the uneven layer as possible.
The top line shows the showroom finish while the blue line shows the aim of wet sanding and how light can reflect much more consistently, giving it the mirror finish you see.

Clay only removes most surface contaminants not paint defects or Orange peel, I'm sure it'll come up a treat though as the paint on those is very very hard and doesn't scratch easily.

Looks like a laquer only scratch to me.
Hard to see, ignore the fabric remains from the mitten LOL

Rob, they look like they'd come out, but hard to say from a pic, can you feel them with your finger nail? do you have access to a orbital/rotary polisher? have you put any wax over it? i'm sure someone local to you could sort it for you.

that's a very good job by hand
have you tried "3m Finesse-it" as the final stage - if you haven't and you can get some then you should give it a go - it's not cheap (about £30 a bottle) but it's superb
I mopped my last two cars - i'm not a pro by any means and these are the best photos I have - i'm going to mop the scooby when I get a chance and hopefully it'll be a lot easier than the bm's - the paint on bm's is ridiculously hard to cut into without a very abrasive polish and even then it's a PITA with a DA![Brickwall](images/smilies/brickwall.gif)

Nice work Jarvis! Very rewarding but time consuming! I've done my van and a couple of bits on the scoob that had been painted and were peely.
Please put a bit of a health warning on this thread though - if only to let people know you know what you're doing! Looking forward to the thread on DW.
Going to have to start calling you the welsh KDS!

thank you - she was mint when i'd finished with her and sold her on for a tidy profit as it was given to me
it was a genuine sport touring 2.5l with full mtech kit and black leather interior and nicely specced - the guy who owned it before me had bought it from new for his nanny and she had done 28,000 in 10 years - they then bought a range rover for the nanny and this sat for nearly 2 years under a tree without a cover - when I asked him about it he said I could have it if I could get it running - she only needed a new battery and fired up and idled perfectly first time
to give you an idea of how bad she was covered completely in about 2mm of green moss, dust and pollen from the tree she was parked under and there was a bramble bush that had grown up through the wheel arch liner and into the engine bay and then back out of the bonnet vents!
I spent around £800 on getting her up to scratch mechanically and cosmetically together with a few performance mods and when I sold her she ran perfectly, everything worked and there wasn't a ding, or scratch on the car
I sent my mate these pictures and he couldn't believe it was the same car![Lol1](images/smilies/lol1.gif)
I was sad to see her go but i'd put 50,000 miles on her in 2 years for work, she was getting a little long in the tooth and someone offered me silly money as it was exactly what he'd been after

I apply quite alot of the products and start with the machine on its lowest speed and increase the speed as the product reduces, not to much presure i used the next product when the going got sticky.
