people seem to have separated out the troublesome group (can I say that?) - The ones with the new 4x4s, vegas vans, and 'motorway maintenance' 'lorries' who just move onto peoples' private property and set up camp and refuse to move until court orders are found (after months of effort). They are not law abiding citizens. . Been on the receiving end of it and if someone's telling me I can't use a certain word to describe them then thats ********. They don't deserve people sticking up for them. To use this term, or any other, to describe these people should be acceptable.
They commit constant crime, cause constant trouble, bully OAPs etc. in the local area until they get moved on.
These are the ones I use the allegedly politically incorrect word for.
I don't use it a word to describe a race, just a person who lives a certain way. They are no different to the thieving scum we all like to slag off every time a car gets jacked or done over etc. and we're allowed to call those ******* whatever we like!

This post should be acceptable: it does not contain said word

This is probally the funniest thread I have read in my 3 odd years of viewing!!

It actually takes me back to my good old school days!

I mean shall we start a thread with the words Joey in it? Come now we all remember that from the school playgrounds of SE Ldn and Kent/Blue peter!

Having had rocks thrown at me, an attempt to run me over with a quad bike and motorbike (resulting in a rather amusing motorbike/quad bike interface) and born witness them steal at least a couple of tanks of diesel from a petrol station. I feel pretty negatively about _ _ _ _'s (fill as appropriate).

What confuses me about this thread is the implication that we are allowed to be offensive about a sector of society, but not use an offensive word.
Like drawing a distinction between "XXX is a tosser" and "XXX is a man with a penchant for self abuse".
Correct me if I am wrong. The use of the word isn't really the issue; if you are going to be offensive, you may as well round off your generalisation with an offensive collective noun.
Isn't the issue one of intolerance, and to what level it is going to be tollerated on Scoobynet?

OF COURSE it's not just the use of the word. It is any comment that offends that sector of society

I'm glad this is funny for you. It's a complete nightmare for me.

Thank you bravo
I just said the same thing in around about way now my thread has gone.
I have a bit of private land that was broken into for two weeks
the TRAVELLERS left in such a state I had a clean up bill of £2500
which was going to be spent on the scooby mods now that has to be put on hold.
I cant do anything about it but when a traveller gets upset by the P word the bb goes ballistic.
I said the same about the advertisers why would they pull thier ads when they are are making money

Question

Just a thought, If i read correctly there is a suprising majority on this thread that had not heard the word before also thanking for the explaination which is fine.

My question is just how many people did complain ? They must obviously either be off or pretend to be of Traveller back ground!

How many times do we use the word Jap on this site? Have Subaru complained?

Look

I am not saying anyone was a really bad person for using this word, or that I would even care less normally about the word as I didn't know what it meant either.

ALL I AM SAYING is that I have a serious issue which requires that we do not continue to make these kind of commments about that sector of society.

It is not a difficult thing to grasp and IMHO not a huge request to make.

The only other option is to close the board

regards

Simon

If only it was that easy Moray, it's not the word it's the sentiment. We can upset a minority group very easily without resorting to making use of the common slang term for them.

Moray

as chuckster said (and as I said a few posts up from this) it is not simply the use of the word. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Look i think we have covered all the angles on this one many times now. Its time to all sit back, think about this one, and pay a bit more respect to SdB. Please try and see the difficvult position he is in, where he wants to uphold the "free speech" part of Scoobynet, but has obviously had some complaints such that have provoked his original reasons for this thread.

I am not the only one who has found the whole direction of this thread disappointing.

SORRY Simon
Recognising demands on your time I'd decided to drop this until I read "of course it's not the use of the word"

Christ (can I use that term without the God Squad threatening legal action) this person has effectively placed an embargo on debate. We have discussions on car crime and theft, question the logic of taking your car to various locations etc. Have taken issue with the Reclaim the Streets Campaign, endlessly complained about the Police and recently identified a supermarket car park where car jacking is a regular occurrence.

Examples of antisocial activity in various locations have been reported on this thread without the use of that word. To eliminate this discussion effectively censors the board and protects the indefensible, its one hell of a way from offensive terminology.

The complainant is presumably monitoring this thread I would be grateful if they could justify supporting any group that prevented rail travellers from using our Station Car Park (must be a favoured spot nowadays). Necessitating a major clean up of an area described a "a major Public Health Hazard" when they moved on.

Or the owners of vehicles that congregated on a local cricket pitch, destroying the pavilion and leaving the ground beyond repair. Those who set fire to parkland so they could bring in additional vehicles. Then when the Fire Brigade arrived their children, under the adult supervision, vandalised one appliance and attempted to set fire to another.

This area, where local kids previously played, became a burnt out wasteland surrounded by tonnes of rubble which was tipped around the perimeter in an attempt to prevent their return

They were not New Age Travellers, certainly not Old Age Travellers as we have them residing quite happily on a pristine jointly managed site provided by the local council.

But it doesn't matter, they could be Polish migrants or Red Indians. Can this person/group not understand their origin is irrelevant, it's their conduct that is the problem and we have as much right to discuss that as Reckless Driving or Speeding!

banshi

there is NO PROBLEM with debate. Just don't post anything offensive / slanderous / libellous about that group. Is it really that difficult to understand???

PLEASE feel free to say.. "I think we should be able to say what we like" unfortunately this would be idealistic and impossible to arrange, and feel free to say "I don't think it was right to start this thread, and I don't think it was right to delete the other threads".. all this is completely fine..

JUST DON'T POST SOMETHING LIKE "Group X steal everything in my area, and blah blah blah". This is not true, and not debate.

regards

Simon

PS. I REALLY REALLY hope this is clear THIS time

"and we have as much right to discuss that as Reckless Driving or Speeding!"

Sure you do sonny, Sure you all do......

But not here! You can free speech all you want (all of you), if you feel that strongly about it then organise a protest, and go stand outside woolies with sandwich boards!!! The point Billy Bob et al, is that YOU are putting SOMEONE ELSE in a position - don't you get it??? Let me spell it out one more time, YOU are making SOMEONE ELSES LIFE DIFFICULT!!!!!! (and someone who made and owns the vehicle for your daily fix of SN - DUHHHH!)

The bottom line is, if you keep on displaying this "sandpit" behaviour (all of you) then someone will take your bucket and spade away, or like your teacher used to say, "If the one who did it doesn't own up - you'll all stay behind"

Mr Anderson - "I know my rights - I want my phone call"

Agent Smith - "What good is a phone call.....If you're unable to speak"

I'd much rather read about David's intercooler than this ****e!!!!!!

When you think about different sayings for different minority groups it makes you wonder where the P word actually originated from and what group it falls into.

Paki= Person originating from Pakistan (semi-offensive, but shouldn't be as it's an abreviation of Pakistan)
Brit= Person originating from Britain not at all offensive
Jap= Person originating from Japan not all offensive
Aussie= Person originating from Australia not at all offensive
Scot= person originating from Scotland not at all offensive
Etc, etc, etc

Then you have words that have been made up by some sort of national dish or landmark to distinguish a person’s country of origin
Kiwi= Person from New Zealand (because of the Kiwi fruit)
Kraut= Person from Germany (because of the popularity of Sauerkraut in the country)
Frog= Person from France because of the popularity of the dish Frog’s legs)
Etc, etc, etc

Then you have a group of words that have a link to a person’s country that everyone understands but varies in different parts of the world.
Asian in North America means an Oriental, Asian in UK means an Indian.
Indian in North America means someone who lives in a Wigwam or an Igloo. East Indian on the other hand means someone from India, West Indian means someone from the Caribbean, over here we just use the term Black.
So far none of the above I consider offensive but Paki is a word that I would use with caution as some people generalise with this word and call a variety of Indian people Paki's when in fact they are from India. (It’s like calling a Kiwi an Aussie)
The next group of words are completely racist and I would never use them on a bbs or Usenet or anywhere for that matter but we all know who they are referring to and Pikey I feel falls into this category.
*****
Ni***r (I hate this word)
Sand Ni***r
Jew
Queer
Lezzy
Etc, etc, etc

So when you think about it however petty you feel that this ban on the Pikey word is Simon has a very good cause to ban it as it is in MY opinion a slur on a minority group.
Just because some people in this group are alleged trouble makers, alleged thieves etc shouldn't make a difference, that's down to generations of social problems and will never stop.

Edited because I can feel a flame war coming on as I thought Paki was not considered offensive anymore)

Where I was raised 'Paki' was a very offensive word. But then it was a pathetic, incest-ridden, insular, xenophobic ex-mining town in the East Midlands. What may not seem offensive to one person can so easily be interpreted differently by someone else.
All this thread does is highlight how some morons love to make noise, never mind any inconvience it may cause others. What it comes down to is this is a free resource we all enjoy spending time using, and the owner deserves to be given a little help from time to time if he needs it. If you are all so fired up about the subject, start your own BBS and run it how u like. Does the BNP have a site?

John,

This was covered a while ago.

I'm afraid Paki is offensive! Especially as it's generalised and used towards anyone of Asian background. Let's see you use that word towards a group of Indian lads, and see what happens!

Shall we start the whole '*****' arguement again!!

Question

John,

Why is Jew on the list?

I'm sure some people have no issue with their religion and being defined by it!

Like all these things, it depends on context. If some one were talking about faith, would you ban people from using the word Jew?

Obviously Neo-**** type comments should be banned.
