Another vote for respecting a simple request.

No-one is trying to brainwash or change you ~ simple request.

Just like if you come round to my house and say "4uck" in front of my kids. Doesn't mean I never use the word myself. Doesn't mean I think you are a t1t, but it would be nice if you could respect my wishes in the specific circumstances in question.

Since Simon is ever the "community-minded" ~ few more votes to close this thread should work. It's all been said (and more).

Thanks Tiggs, comic genius indeed.

Grousey

You are a true hero. Unlike me, being such a whimp I use my real name, you are man enough to make up an anonymous name and go to all the trouble of setting up a hotmail account so you can post other people's homophobic comedy on the servers and software I provided for you to call me gay.

You must be very proud.

Thanks to the majority for all your support. I will close this thread now for the reasons you are stating. I hate doing this as I always want to leave threads that question the way scoobynet is run open so it can be discussed. Unfortunately, while the majority seem to agree with how it is run, the minority who can't work this out, can't either put together an argument based on the actual subject.

All the best

Simon

I dunno......

I can go all the way across the world, log on in the middle of nowhere after weeks of being denied scoobynet priviledges and still find farcical controversy!

In my view, what I refer to as a pikey is a traveller-type person who makes no active effort to earn a honest living by performing honest jobs, as in not offering to 'Tarmac your Drive', not steal clothes from your back garden, not falling asleep in your front garden, then claiming that they live in your house and getting most upset when you have to resort to chokeholding them when they keep trying to force their way into your front door/window pissed out of their heads.
I have had all 3 of these things happen to me in Farnham whilst I have lived there. Add to that their children who come around in the summer months offering to clean your car and try to nick your dustcaps at the very least when you say no thanks. Again, caught them twice trying it.
As for the good, honest traveller folk, respect to them, keep doing whatever gives you joy......... Not my bag baby however.......

Red face

I would like to meet the person that has complained - what a CENSORED, and I doubt that s/he is even a CENSORED.

Probably just a CENSORED housewive/husband who likes to complain about things they have no control over. The type that call people "binperson" instead of CENSORED, etc etc. What a load of CENSORED.

Come on, own up whoever you are and tell us why you think we should be censored in this way?????

This world is getting out of control in more ways than one. People are far too serious these days. How can you be offended at CENSORED FFS!!!! I am "well built" but dont get offended when someone calls me a CENSORED CENSORED - I have a larf about it, now grow up!!

'Pikey' now refers to anyone from Kent exhibiting tendencies to do one or any of the following:

Wear shell suits/ski pants
Wear gold hoop earings (laydees)
Wear more than three gold rings on each hand
Drive Max Powered Novas/Orions, with blue strobe lights and all the other usual tasty additions with the bass pumpin'.

So what if was a derogatory term from Romany travellers in the 18 Century - are other historic derogatory terms going to be banned? The person who complained is a wastrel and a buffoon, and should be roundly whipped like the dog he is!

Actually, 'Tory' is a historic derogatory term which refers to an Irish Roman Catholic outlaw who preyed on English settlers. Can we remove all threads that say 'Tory' or at least search-and-replace the term with 'Honourable Members of the Conservative Party of Great Britain'

I think Simon was referring to the post by Barnstormer and others whose posts he's had to edit.

I dont believe the bbs can be closed on the grounds of racism against nomads, carnies, pikeys, gypsies etc. etc.

it might become unpopular (hardly, given this thread).

the whole freedom of speech means you cant be sued for it. You can have a reputation though.

If this were the case then why arent the editors of the magazines which publish **** league adverts and national front campaigns threatened with having their publication shut down.

You can't censor freedom of speech like that. Although in some cases that is unfortunate.

In this case there is more to it that simon cant reveal and as such I suppose we have to accept his request not to use it.

Frankly I can see it is a derogatory term, but I also thought it was a self label too.

if it isnt to be used due to offense then I can handle that.

edited by webmaster in complete disgust that you have ignored all my respectful requests! I really don't have the spare time for this, and am SERIOUSLY irritated.

Further action will be taken (possibly against ALL accounts that have posted this kind of thing since I first requested it stopped) against any further posts of this kind.

Good point lunchie but we should be free to express ourselves in any way we see fit.

The word pikey should not offend anyone because it’s neither racist nor prejudice.

Its a word that means "from the road" which is exactly that they are, travellers of the road!

Its like saying I am offended by someone calling me a Geordie because I am from the north east,bl00by stupid!!!

My point doesn't just relate to the 'P' word, but any word that person A may find fine, but person B may find offensive - so we don't have to go through this rigmarole again. It does relate to scoobies, because during their normal postings people use language could be misinterpreted - ie I used the work 'pikey' in connection with Gold alloys on Scoobs, which my wife said were 'pikey' - hence this kick-off!

Adam - not questioning Simon's right to moderate - rather how can we avoid this at all, when people use words they don't believe are offensive...

it was also the name of the black dog in Dambusters and that was a dog belonging to a good man who battled baddies with his plane and bomb!

adding that Atticus Finch was the goddie in TKAMB

John I can appreciate what you are saying about the differences in these people, I have worked on some static sites and the caravans I worked in installing alarms systems were immaculate and the women were very nice, friendly and cooperative, but then the men came and most of them seem to have this major chip on their shoulder about something, we had no end of problems in the village I grew up in from the people on this static site and our local pub was ultimately closed due to them, cars were vandalised in the car park and I had the orange beacons stolen off the roof of my van in the pub car park, the day after I refused to sell them to one of the locals from sed site. I am not taring everybody with the same brush but it only takes a few bad apples to ruin the barrel and most people remember the bad barrels, even it is only one.

Simon,

Why not just alter the bbs software to add the offending words to the swearword filter, or simply dissallow posts that contain the words. Surely that is the straightforward, logical, rational, reasonable approach to solving this problem.

Stating that closing the board is the "only" other option just gives the impression that you are making rash decisions in the heat of the moment rather than thinking things through, which, from recollection of past performance, is not the image you seem to want to project in public.
