I spoke to the trader and asked if the paintwork was original but he said it had been painted in some places therefore i got put off. It seemed a nice car though plus he was willing to negotiate and said 8.8k. Good buy, he did also mention that he 'thinks' the mileage is in km.

I never offered him 8.8k, he was willing to take 8.8k. It does seem like a nice car, nothing major there at all. After all it was a bargain price. He did say it was Ecutek'd? Put some snaps up!

I have been toying with the idea myself of buying a evo 8/9 for the last few months especially when i took my mates fq400 on a track day last year. The grip was a phenominal and nearly every corner I went round ,the car was in 3WD . Subaru's I have driven up to the blobeye will understeer when you give them 'death' in the bends,where as the electronics in the evo means you dont need to work so hard at the wheel.I cant comment on a hawkeye as i have not driven one,but after taking my mates fq out for a blast last night for 45 mins it is like a axe murderer on wheels.When accelerating hard ,each gear change felt like you were having a heart attack .
The main things that go against the evo imho, is the lack of breakers compared to subaru's as well as the servicing cost,which are extortionate.,small fuel tank & 4 -6 mpg when blasting it around a track. Despite this I still enjoy driving one .
I always seem to remember a quote from a famous motoring journalist saying: To get the very best out of an evo,you have to go beyond the line of where bravery becomes insanity.

I just read on Wikipedia, that the racing versions of the EVO don't have any of the driver assists, such as AYC.
I'll further this conundrum with this little story;
A friend of mine started off in a classic STi, moving on to an EVO and up to his present car of a Nissan GTR. Guess what, he's sick of the GTR, because it feels clinical, in that the car does most of the driving when your trying to have fun. He's now considering going backwards and to an R34.
In saying all this, I still believe that the EVO's are superior to Scoobys in their build quality and performance. I wish I could have a cross breed;

I agree totally with you mate ,which if the emphasis was on buying a car for pure driving thrills , I would NOT buy an evo .If I wanted a car where you have to constantly drive it , then it would be a 3 door sierra cosworth . I owned 2 of these In the late 80's and they were just brutal - big power, rwd , low grip meant every journey was an adventure, and in the wet they were just damned right dangerous

I've just come from owning an Evo IX FQ-340 to a STI JDM and think the cars are similiar with slight differences.
The Evo is definetly a better handling car compared to the STI in standard form. I've had two Imprezas and they both seemed to produce slightly more understeer and were not as confidence inspiring in the wet. The downside was the ride was bone crunching with the Bilstein suspension setup. You could drive over a coin and know if it was heads or tails. As I used the car everyday, it soon began to wear thin.
It is also a lot easier to get power out of the Evo. £800 and you can have a 400BHP car that is safe on a standard engine. Having said that, the STI produces much more torque. My STI now produces 344bhp which was the same as my Evo, but the power delivery feels a lot nicer in the STI and is more responsive. The evo would pull hard from around 3000rpm, but it was just a very violent affair! lol
Servicing the evo was an almighty pain in the ****. Every 4.5k miles I would take the car over to Wales to Indigo GT for it's relentless servicing. These would range from £150-£600 depending on which service was due. I was also very nervous of when the AYC pump WOULD fail. I owned the car for over two years and thankfully never had any problems. But the horror stories you hear from other owners was a constant fear in the back of your mind. These can be reconditioned for about £500 which is better than the £2k fee for a new one. With the STI it's much easier to get serviced but still costs around the same. But there's never any fear that something is gonna break without warning.
The look and feel of the Evo is, IMHO, a lot better than the STI. The nice carbon touches to the rear spoiler, vortex generator and front splitter made the car look quite flashy. Her backside was also a lot nicer . The rear diffuser was a nice feature. Interiors are pretty much the same.
In conclusion I say you should base your choice on what you want the car for. If it's an everyday car, then the STI wins hands down. If it's for a weekend blast or is going to be tracked, then I would personally go for the Evo. This is just my opinion based on having owned both. Any questions feel free to ask.

Ive had a few Subaru's and an Evo 8 MR which dyno'd at 407bhp.
The Evo did feel a lot sharper, OE suspension etc is much better, the Impreza's suspension felt really soft in comparison.
But saying that, I thought my Subaru's felt better built. The Evo felt a bit rattly, especially the interior which is really poor.
My 380bhp classic felt far quicker than the 407bhp Evo. Alot of passengers in My Evo also commented that my previous lower powered Impreza pulled much harder.
Kept the Evo only 5 months before selling it on.

Had a white Evo 9 GT before the RA-R - it was a nice car and would have another one but just no where near the RA-R - man i miss that car The RA-R is in another league! Why did yous let me sell her

As you mention the Evo is more of a weekend blast car, that is what the car will be used for mainly & track use.
I have been considering that as I could easily have a 500hp classic for not a lot. Everyone I know is advicing the classic route. I've had so many classics previously & the annoying thing about them is that everyone has got one & they have become VERY common in my area with a bad rep.

Whichever you go for, you'll have a cracking car. As mentioned before, I would look at getting a IX GT as it is cracking drivers car with no bloody AYC!

With this in mind, you have to consider how much actual driving effort you are putting in and in essence the car is actually making up for your lack of advanced fast driving skills!

My personal take on UK Subarus is that they're boring and not trackworthy out of the box which is why many think the Evo is best. But the JDM stis are awesome cars and more of a performance match.
people seem to forget the price difference between these two cars when new. Im sure my old mans widetrack was 24k new, probably 10k cheaper than a simular aged evo.
The raw power delivery, adjustable torque split, rally inspired noise and looks that i personally love is why i prefer the subaru, plus im against driving aids. With a few mods i think they are superb, out of the box they are crap.

I owned an Evo 7 with xt330 pack and for a brief time an Evo 9 fq360 and now own a my05 sti in crystal grey with ppp.
The cars are very different, day to day the sti is so much easier to live with although I only use it on weekends for fun.
The evo as a track toy or weekend car you won't find better.
When I was looking to buy an evo or sti i budgeted myself 8k as the amount of time it would be stood bothered me. I was originally looking at a 9 fq360 up at 13k, did the deal went to pay and found a load of finance on the car just before I paid for it, so got very lucky.
The car really was a nice car to drive if a little narrow across the seat base the same as all latter evos, it's difficult to compare the 9 I briefly had as it had 60 hp more than my sti which will be mapped soon. The power on the 9 was relentless instant and smooth, thanks to the mitec engine. I liked the cabin of the 9 felt a nicer place to be, although the cabin in my 7 had a few rattles. The cabins were very similar so in time the 9 may of had the same issues. Had no ayc issues in my ownership but 9's are 6 years old now so problems may not be too far away despite mileage, 9 gt's no ayc but come at a premium. If your into mods or want 400 hp leave the mr's or fq 360/340's alone as you'll pay more for them than standard cars with no real benefit.
Servicing is 4500 miles or six months and more expensive than sti servicing, road tax can be in the £460 bracket. My nearest evo specialist was 60 miles away Subaru specialist 12 miles this too helped me make my decision.
Really my budget made my decision for me really 8k buys a 9 year old 2003 evo 8 or a 7 year old low mileage 05 sti.
Tough decision ahead for you although I don't think you can make a wrong decision as both cars are great.

I agree with tommy, my local owners club is riddled with poorly modifed tat, none of it is done by 'chavs' though, just guys in their 30's, 40's and 50's with a bad taste in modifications.
It seems the first line of mods with most scoobs is a set of stickers and a dump valve.
All of this will fade away i think and one day they will be slightly more desirable just like what happened with cossies. On that note im staying put.
I'd be a pleased man if they banned stickers and lexus lights

Kas, if I'm not mistaken the EVO 8's didn't come with variable valve timing. It was introduced on the EVO 9. Subaru's version, AVCR, was introduced in 2005, on the widetrack model.
