A couple of people on this thread have made comments along the lines of 'I know what my dog is capable of'.

For me this begs the HUGE question, why did you get the damned thing in the first place then??

Could it be because of 'what it is capable of'

Not just the chav wellhardys in the trekkies, there are many people who wear teacher style boring clothes from Bennaton; like Royal family do e.g. chinos, cricket jumpers and pale coloured windseeters, and let their dangerous dogs loose in the country parks. These people think that they own the park, and therefore they have this right to scare the commoners' little kids with their big and dangerous dogs. We also have some dangerous dog loving rich people living in the mansions and large farm houses around here. Their dangerous dogs come charging at you like lions from their open drives with no big gates, and scare you off from your peaceful walk. So there is this middle-aged middle class poncers class to blame as well. If you say anything to them, they shout for their dog with their "doughnut in mouth" accent: "Bruno! Good boy! Get here! NOW!" and then look at you up and down with disgust. Such owners should be walked about on a lead by their dogs, not them walking their dogs. Idiots.

Yes, ban the idiots. Their dogs are unfortunate to be with them. Let the dogs be with the good owners who know how to keep one. Not with the duffers who use their dogs as their ego extension. It includes both chavs and upper class teacher type chavs with Prince Charles's spahhhhaghhhheththththeeeeehhhh (copyright: that Chinese looking comedian) accent.

I wont even go into the retarded comments i've had because my dog is large, and to some has a wolf-look. Like others have said, the wee-dog syndrome is far worse, but deemed acceptable because you could stand on the little rat.

I agree though...dogs are and can be dangerous. Some people should be banned and fined and basically "done in" because of how they treat their dogs. For the majority, it's the owners' fault, not the dogs.

OK, a car is considered dangerous etc, so is a dog. So why are there not tests/laws to become a licensed dog owner????

Would you still be allowed to walk your dog home after one too many at the local?

Yep!

We bought our dog for one main reason and that is security! I live in a county where I can be prosecuted for a defending myself in my own home so I have dog to do it for me, I have a nice Subaru in the garage a lot of electrical toys and recording studio all upping my chances of burglary (already been done once pre dog)

My dog is a tool bought for a purpose but also now a member of the family on our terms.

When asked in the street does he bite "yes he's a dog!" Is my response I don't want folks to know or think he's friendly.

I always walk my dog on a lead no matter where we are out of respect for people that don't like dogs or other dog owners, I've had many a rant at owners that lets there dogs run as a pack off the lead (driving my dog wild) they tell me that "their alright!" no their not it's a wolf derivative that will draw blood if it wants, even more so in a pack!

I think a yearly dog tax/licence or even a test should be carried out to make sure owners are suitable in the first place.

just my 2p!

I would be in favour, of licensing dog owners, even competency certificates..but how would you police it ?

I wouldn't be very impressed if i had to pass an owners/apptitude test in front of some suit wearing beuaracractic pen pushing idoit with the personality of a wheel nut and no knowledge of the breed of dog you have or want to own, but also not from a regular dog owner who's attitude is " a dog is a dog and there all the same "...There not!!

They would need to be breed specific tester/examiners which will never happen i'm affraid

I have said this in my post and think you've misunderstood.
When I say I know what my dog is capable of or not, that means I know when to have on lead and were to not have on lead and were safe to to so, if a dog comes running towards her with an aggressive attitude then that's we're things can get nasty as anyone would to protect them selfs, but touch wood she has never been aggressive to any other dog or person, but as a big dog you just have to be carefully as I belive it's owners responsibility as the owner.
Any dog is loving and caring if brought up correctly, you just can't trust other owners with their dogs that brings the large breed down, I.e chavs.

P.s have you owned/have a dog yourself before posting such a remark?

Why not just have a law that says all dogs must be muzzled at all times when out in public?

So you would deprive all dogs from playing with a tennis ball, or sticks on a park just because a few people have an irrational fear of dogs because they " could " bite..........Have you tried to put a muzzle on a chihuahua

Thats like saying that all kids under the age of 16/18 should be rounded up by the police and handed back to their parents by 7pm because they " might " cause misscheif.....it's not going to happen is it ?

Dont be silly Mike, its the only way you will ever stop dogs attacking other people or dogs. Nobody can read a dogs mind, it could be the nicest dog in the world, and then turn in an instant - I've seen it happen with my own eyes - But hey, **** the kids that get mauled, as long as your dog can chase a stick.....

I think 7 pm is a bit harsh. Say 7.30 and you're onto a winner

Dog attacks is a much smaller problem than the anti-social behaviour of children cant we do parent tests before allow people to have kids?

And annual children licence if you fall to pay it we stop your child allowance i dont see why we should give benefits to people who cant raise they children properly and next time someone has a kid screaming in Tesco they should be forced to gag it as why should the rest of us have to listern to it mis behave!

As a responsible owner i know that not allowing a dog to play and run free and play games like retrieve and tug outside leads to a troubled dog and i dont see why the majority of dogs should suffer because of a few bad owners.

when out my dogs are better mannered than the children around yet it is me because i am a dog owner who is targeted time and again by the people who are ignorant.

The number of people who do stupid things around dogs every day but never take responsibility for there action just high lights the total inability of people to take responsibility for their actions

Would you care to name and describe some of these stupid things that people do around dogs, and also point out whether you'd consider them equally stupid if done away from any dogs?

walk up to a dog you dont know waving a stick above your head

walk up to a dog you dont know and grab it

grab a dog you dont know as it walks past you when on a lead because you want to feel its coat

rub you hand all over its face despite being asked not to 3 times by its owner

walk up to it (its a 14 week old puppy) and scream and shout at it because it has stolen the tennis ball

all of which i consider unacceptable because if you replace the word dog with child people would be horrified if some one did that and yet an intelligent dog will have the same mental ability as say a 4 year old child and we still expect a much high standard of behaviour and social manners than we do of teenagers.
