So negative.

The MacBook Pro is now the best Gaming machine available, you fanboys would be wetting your knickers if Acer had released anything close.

Do any games actually support 1800 resolution?

I see it's got a 650M which is a huge leap for apple but still feigning behind the rest of the gaming world. I'd like to see some gaming tests to see how well it copes and also how hot it gets.

I don't get the Apple loyalty, we have a houseful of various Apple and other things, I like my Ipad but I also like my Android phone, don't feel the need to champion one over the other, I am simply a consumer not a brand ambassador.

I don't get it either, next thing there'll be groups of people online chatting on a forum related to a particular car. Madness.

I fixed that for you.

The screen is a fantastic piece of work, not least because of the hope of it forcing others to raise their game and stamp out the ridiculous 1366x768 resolution.

The downside is that the extra pixel density is only really going to go on making things look sharper. Also, while I have no doubt that Apple will engineer OSX so it scales onto that resolution correctly, Windows is not in my experience as well behaved, and it could be difficult to use at such a resolution.

Not in this case - that screen alone is worth a bucket.

As an example, the 30" 2560x1600 I'm sat in front of was a grand. Something physically smaller with higher resolution is not going to be cheap (woe betide those who break their screens), so the retina MBP actually seems decent value.

The non-retina MBPs do look overpriced in comparison though.

To be fair I've been comparing it against similar spec gaming laptops and it's pretty close. Other than going for a brandless laptop it sits pretty well with the competition.

I think you'll find that's been available on the iPhone for years as well. What you're talking about is FaceTime and you'll never experience that sort of quality on anything but Apple products.

whilst i have no interest in the mac vs pc war that continues on, to make that sort of claim is quite drastic.
so your saying that i can not get a better gaming machine for the £2,300 price tag for a 15 inch screen with retina display ? oh and the thunderbolt 27 inch display at a further £900 sorry forgot that. (http://store.apple.com/uk/configure/MC976B/A?=)

wow and i thought that gaming on a 23 inch display was good, imagine going down to a 15inch .

sorry but, looking at reality if someone wanted to buy a dedicated gaming machine do you honestly think they would not look at a dedicated pc build first? i know that for the £2,300 budget the machine i would have would be much more capable at games than the mbp.
asus do thnderbolt so a nice asus motherboard build with the 27 inch dispaly from apple and you have over halved the build cost already.

i like apple's stuff dont get me wrong but as a gamer there is no way i can agree with your bold statement

Are you really trying to claim that the best video chat system available, anywhere, at any budget, is only to be found on Apple products?

Or do you really mean that Facetime is excellent quality video chat for portable devices and a limited number of desktop users, and that it's unknown yet what degradation in video quality will result from using cellular connectivity.

You really can't go making sweeping statements to try and position Apple as the best thing in all circumstances and situations, as it's not true and discredits your statements.

And are you saying that for the last 6 years this has not been available on Apple devices only Android?

What I'm saying is you'll never experience that sort of quality on anything but Apple products and I'm saying it because it's true.

So, right this minute, you can make a Facetime call over a cellular network?

Who said anything about Android? I was doing video calls on a Sony Ericsson when the iPhone was a tinkle in Jobs' eye.

Commercial video conferencing systems are better quality than Facetime. You encompassed them with your sweeping statement.

The the Macbook Pro Retina has it's RAM soldered to the board, so you can not upgrade it in the future, why isn't Apple telling people about this permanent limitation? that would **** me off if a few years down the line i wanted to upgrade from 8gb to 16 or 16 to 32.

I don't understand why they could not incorporate a ram flip like everyone else.

Given the history of the Iphone's development are you surprised at this mate?

Apple don't want you fiddling with their stuff or buying any 3rd party gear (quite a few 3rd parties do aftermarket RAM after all) and if you want an update, Yep, there's a new model for that!

They're evil geniuses I tells ya!

Soldering the Ram sucks! I love holding off upgrading, feels like a new machine when I add some later.

Beef, yes, the beta is available for download. I can assure you it's better than your Sony and as its intergrated with the OS better than any third party solution.

once again the overactive apple lovers can not see the reality over handing over buckets of cash for "the prestige of owning something from apple" ..

acer .. pmsl ookkkkk whatever you are drinking or taking under prescription i feel you may have to cut down...
good luck with sitting at the front of the queue for a phone that has only had a small tweak and rebadged as the next best thing.
apple hype, and that in reality is all it is. hype. some people fall for it and spend a fortune, i unfortunatly do not .

Do Apple actually design any hardware these days?

Sheep = Apple.

Nuff said

I have Apple products, but I'm no fan of their business practices. And nothing they do is actually special, good, but not special.

I love the two iPads I've had. But the iPhone is really awful. The Mac Mini I have, with SuperDrive is four years old and still going strong and is fantastic. The MacBook is crap and has been binned.

Apple are excellent at marketing, nothing more, nothing less. Their technology is not groundbreaking, their software is also not.

But I want them to succeed, I got in on their shares in the early 90's and make a fair income from that side.

Cheers

Ian

I have worked out your very careful phrasing here - cellular video calling has been available on the iphone for nearly but not actually 'years' (less than 2 is not IMO a plural). However, that is only via the third-party apps you are so dismissive of.

Facetime via cellular has only been available for a handful of days, and even then only if you're prepared to use a beta of iOS 6, which is officially a developer-only release and therefore not generally available to the masses in any official or supported manner. Still, I concede it is possible to a very small minority of iPhone users; 7 years after I did it (with OS-integrated simplicity) on one of these: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sony_Ericsson_V800

The quality of Facetime via cellular is as yet unknown, although this video gives an example:
This does not look significantly different to the quality of other cellular video calling systems I have used, but one youtube video is not representative.

However, this does not get away from a fundamental inaccuracy in your statements: Your sweeping statement that to get Facetime level quality is only possible via Apple products is just wrong. By not narrowing your statement you have unwisely placed Facetime against all sorts of commercial and enterprise class video calling systems.

I also see you have resorted to the bastion of 'If you don't buy Apple it must be because you can't afford it'. These are statements made with absolutely no basis in fact whatsoever and simply make you look childish and your arguments weak.
