Once bitten, twice shy with regards to Sony now, I'm afraid...
Mind if I ask how many years use you got out of it, before it started playing up?

I bought it 21 March 2005. It was used, but worked great in the early years. Sony DVP-NS930V.

It sometimes runs okay. But ultimately it's got progressively worse. I'm sure it's a laser issue; maybe something to do with, perhaps, fluctuating power to it...???

Yep, could well be. If you've already tried cleaning the lens with IPA and a cotton bud, most likely culprits probably are power components or the alignment has drifted for some other reason.

I can't remember if I attempted to clean it lol.

But no worries; as tomorrow I collect a Samsung 3D Blu-ray player, with WiFi/internet TV and a (token 1Gb) HDD.

New Blu-ray all up and running, etc.

It came with a late version of the firmware on it, and HD over component was working.

Updated to the very latest f/w, and all is good; component still squirts out 720p/1080i.

Also, my PS3 talks to my Samsung 3D TV fine. Turns the tv on if I turn on the PS3, or turns the PS3 on if I put it on the channel for it. Also goes into 3D mode automatically no problem.
Web browser on the PS3 is poo, but you do get apps such as iPlayer, Netflix, Lovefilm, 4OD etc... I think it makes a good all round choice over standalone player.
Slightly off topic, but I've tried to get my PS3 to "talk" like that with my Samsung telly and it no worky, any ideas? I enabled the HDMICsummatorother option on the PS3....

I went from a ps3 to a Sasmung stand alone player and could see a noticeable difference in picture quality the stand alone player won hands down.

Hey Dunk, how's the 220?!

I too may well buy a multi-region-capable 220...

Q for ya: In addition to 1080p capability, can the 220 scale to either 720p and/or 1080i - and indeed 576p/480p - from the HDMI, too?!

If so, does the menu allow you to always 'force' any one of those outputs, regardless of the disc's 'native' res.?

The user manual doesn't really make it clear.

Any help, much appreciated.

Mine is all up and running even got T'internet hooked up and can play my You Tube playlists on it!!

As for the technical questions, I have absolutely no clue, tell me what to look for (and how to do it ) and I'll happily have a butchers hook for you.

Quite happy with my wee combination of the 220 and the sound bar so far.

No worries.

In that case, I don't suppose you could film yourself navigating through the picture settings menu options and posting the vid up here?

That way, I'll 'know' what to look out for (IYSWIM?)... And therefore my mind will be put to rest (or not lol)...

Out of curiosity Joz, what does the above do anyway? is it best to have it set to automatic or is there a better setting I should use? I'm a bit of a daft **** when it comes to this stuff.

It's desirable to choose the resolution that's the same as (or closest to) your TV/display/monitor panel's native resolution (horizontal pixel count x vertical lines). You need to check the tech spec at the back of your plasma/LCD/LED TV's user manual...

It'll invariably be one of the below:-

1280x720 - use "720p" on the 220

1366x768 - use "720p" on the 220

1920x1080 - if your display accepts progressive 1080, use "1080p" on the 220. If not use "1080i" (interlaced).

What you're doing is allowing the 220 to 1:1 pixel match (or as closely as is possible) the output from the player to the display's screen. This will yield a better image, as it will bypass the display's internal scaler (usually not all that good). 1080 Blu-ray discs will be in proper HD (which would also be the case if you left the 220 in "Auto" mode)...

...But SD 480i/576i DVDs will get upscaled to 1080 or 720, prior to delivery to the screen. Depending on the quality of the DVD transfer, then this can sometimes improve image quality to almost 'HD-like' perception.

Yeah, as said, it should mention it in the user manual somewhere - usually near to the back under "Technical Specification"....

Yeah, at the moment I have an (older model) Sammy BD-C6900 (only got it the other week ) -- great player with 3D/WiFi/apps/file-sharing/USB, etc. Indeed, extremely similar spec to the Panny DMP-BDT220 in fact.

But what I forgot to take on board was the region coding... The Sammy is not multi-region; it's only Region B & 2. So I can't play my existing archive of beloved R1 DVDs! And it can't be hacked neither.

So I intend to get that multi-region 220... And that way I can get Region-A Blu-rays from the States (and also be able to view my existing R1 DVDs). They usually have more/better extras. But even better than that, it means that I can buy Region-A Blu-rays months earlier than their Region-B counterparts!

I was under the impression, 3d could not be broadcast at 1080p? With this panny what's the actual 3D like is the depth and movement good? When I watch it at the minute I get a lot of flicker and the 3D is not that clear and "pop outs" not sharp.

I have a "Samdung" Blu-Ray hard disk recorder and I'm on the second unit which also just lost its WIFi connectivity. Absolute rubbish.

Whats the best setting for 3D then? does it change from 1080 to what ever the best setting is automatically?

Mine changes automatically, it's more to do with the hdmi cable than anything else I believe as they cannot carry enough bandwidth.

So far my Sammy BD-C6900 is working great -- and it's a used item!

But your anecdotal evidence has reinforced my decision to go ahead and get the Panny DMP-BDT220...

I'm as **** as hell when it comes to choosing AV gear. I (can) take ages researching.

I always have a list of what it must be capable of... And sometimes it's hard to find the correct product that ticks ALL my boxes (within reason)...
