3D Blu-Ray Player Recommendations...???

Ha. My current (regular SD/ED) DVD player is a Sony - I bought it on rave reviews at the time. And it IS (was!) a great DVD player; fantastic image! BUT... it's ****ed up; I'm getting regular "The disc is dirty" messages. So it seems a bit sensitive.
So I'm sort of killing 3 birds with 1 stone with my replacement 3D/Blu-ray/Internet player for it.
Once bitten, twice shy with regards to Sony now, I'm afraid...

I bought it 21 March 2005. It was used, but worked great in the early years. Sony DVP-NS930V.
It sometimes runs okay. But ultimately it's got progressively worse. I'm sure it's a laser issue; maybe something to do with, perhaps, fluctuating power to it...???

PS3 can do 5.1 sound through the optical out or 7.1 through HDMI
Also, my PS3 talks to my Samsung 3D TV fine. Turns the tv on if I turn on the PS3, or turns the PS3 on if I put it on the channel for it. Also goes into 3D mode automatically no problem.
Web browser on the PS3 is poo, but you do get apps such as iPlayer, Netflix, Lovefilm, 4OD etc... I think it makes a good all round choice over standalone player.

I went from a ps3 to a Sasmung stand alone player and could see a noticeable difference in picture quality the stand alone player won hands down.

I too may well buy a multi-region-capable 220...
Q for ya: In addition to 1080p capability, can the 220 scale to either 720p and/or 1080i - and indeed 576p/480p - from the HDMI, too?!
If so, does the menu allow you to always 'force' any one of those outputs, regardless of the disc's 'native' res.?
The user manual doesn't really make it clear.
Any help, much appreciated.

As for the technical questions, I have absolutely no clue, tell me what to look for (and how to do it ) and I'll happily have a butchers hook for you.
Quite happy with my wee combination of the 220 and the sound bar so far.

No worries.
In that case, I don't suppose you could film yourself navigating through the picture settings menu options and posting the vid up here?
That way, I'll 'know' what to look out for (IYSWIM?)... And therefore my mind will be put to rest (or not lol)...

Out of curiosity Joz, what does the above do anyway? is it best to have it set to automatic or is there a better setting I should use? I'm a bit of a daft **** when it comes to this stuff.

It's desirable to choose the resolution that's the same as (or closest to) your TV/display/monitor panel's native resolution (horizontal pixel count x vertical lines). You need to check the tech spec at the back of your plasma/LCD/LED TV's user manual...
It'll invariably be one of the below:-
1280x720 - use "720p" on the 220
1366x768 - use "720p" on the 220
1920x1080 - if your display accepts progressive 1080, use "1080p" on the 220. If not use "1080i" (interlaced).
What you're doing is allowing the 220 to 1:1 pixel match (or as closely as is possible) the output from the player to the display's screen. This will yield a better image, as it will bypass the display's internal scaler (usually not all that good). 1080 Blu-ray discs will be in proper HD (which would also be the case if you left the 220 in "Auto" mode)...
...But SD 480i/576i DVDs will get upscaled to 1080 or 720, prior to delivery to the screen. Depending on the quality of the DVD transfer, then this can sometimes improve image quality to almost 'HD-like' perception.

Yeah, at the moment I have an (older model) Sammy BD-C6900 (only got it the other week ) -- great player with 3D/WiFi/apps/file-sharing/USB, etc. Indeed, extremely similar spec to the Panny DMP-BDT220 in fact.
But what I forgot to take on board was the region coding... The Sammy is not multi-region; it's only Region B & 2. So I can't play my existing archive of beloved R1 DVDs! And it can't be hacked neither.
So I intend to get that multi-region 220... And that way I can get Region-A Blu-rays from the States (and also be able to view my existing R1 DVDs). They usually have more/better extras. But even better than that, it means that I can buy Region-A Blu-rays months earlier than their Region-B counterparts!

12th June i recommended the BDT310, by now you could have watched about a zillion films. Do you take this long to make all your decisions?

I'm as **** as hell when it comes to choosing AV gear. I (can) take ages researching.
I always have a list of what it must be capable of... And sometimes it's hard to find the correct product that ticks ALL my boxes (within reason)...
