IF IT SHOULD BE

If it should be that I grow weak
And pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then you must do what must be done,
For this last battle cannot be won.

You will be sad, I understand.
Don't let your grief then stay your hand.
For this day, more than all the rest,
Your love for me must stand the test.

We've had so many happy years.
What is to come can hold no fears.
You'd not want me to suffer so;
The time has come -- please let me go.

Take me where my need they'll tend,
And please stay with me till the end.
Hold me firm and speak to me,
Until my eyes no longer see.

I know in time that you will see
The kindness that you did for me.
Although my tail its last has waved,
From pain and suffering I've been saved.

Please do not grieve -- it must be you
Who had this painful thing to do.
We've been so close, we two, these years;
Don't let your heart hold back its tears.

Sorry to hear your news Pete.

Sorry for your loss, Pete. Always remember: you did the right thing for a friend when they needed you the most!

Take some time to remember the good times, be glad for those and move on; pets wouldn't want us to be unhappy!

Feel better soon!

I am so sorry to hear about your loss Pete. Mrs Leslie and I are hopeless animal lovers and we have been through similar experiences of course. Does not stop us from continuing to have pets though. They are very important to our lives.

Sorry for the loss,
I've lost a few dogs over the years,
My current greyhound is 11 this year and she's the first which I can truly say is my dog, got her when I bought my own house, got her from a rescue centre and she is always with me, will be gutted to lose her when the time comes.

Gutted for you mate, it really is a terrible thing!!

My 8 year old German Shepherd died there in January,he was into everything with me, always in the way and stuck in the road lol....i miss him a lot:

My advice to you is to do what i did, get another one as soon as, it wont replace the dog you had but it will help a lot....

There is no pian like loosing a dog.
I had my 12 year old Rough Collie put down a week before my 20th birthday. He had a stroke and although physically alive he'd died mentally so although I KNEW it was the right thing to do it ripped me apart.
It took a few days to really sink in but when it did I was a right old mess.
Now, 14 years later, whenever I think of him I just have a big grin on my face.

My mum got a rescue dog a few months later and she helped no end. She's now 16 and her body is starting to really decline so i've prepared myself for loosing her soon

I've wanted a GSD since i was little and I have litterly just emailed a breeder near me who has some 6 week old puppies he's lineing up to sell.
If you're in the east of England I can provide some details if you're interested.

Thanks all .... each message has meant a lot to me

I 'think' that I will take a break of a few months before I jump in again ...... my wife tells me it was 3 years between the last GSD and this past one (I didn't think it was that long - but, we did a lot of things that you are restricted from doing if you have a dog ... I don't like putting them into Kennels).

It's still tough - I kept some of my pork chops tonight and took them to her bowl ...... just there is no bowl and no dog!

We gave all my dogs stuff to the local shelter , beds , bowls , toys everything ( including leftover epilepsy medication) only to have to buy new stuff a few months later ! Know what u mean about the freedom of not having a dog , holidays without a "baby" sitter !

We have disposed of everything ...... couldn't use the same lead, etc. for another dog - we will buy all new when/if we get another.

Trouble is, if I'm still around in about 12 years, I need to go through all the pain and saddness once again .......... but, would I trade the past tearful days for the 12 1/2 years of her by my side?

NOT A CHANCE!!!

I used to walk her before I went to work .... it's really strange leaving the house - I 'know' I've forgotten to do something!
