Well i find this thread very interesting. It's almost like the completely over the top discussions they have on Gearslutz where everyone thinks they know better than everyone else.
All this talk of audiophiles and real hi-fi sound etc is such a funny subject. and it gets even better when people talk of music being reproduced the way the artist has intended. Frankly, you are never going to get the music to sound exactly the way the artist intended.
And also, when using hi-fi systems, you will never actually get that high fidelity sound you are after unless your room has been properly treated acoustically.
Hearing music and sounds through whatever system and speaker set up is completely subjective. Of course you get cheap and nasty systems which literally produce bad sounding music, but even when you pay for decent quality they all have their pros and cons. Some set ups will produce a warmer sound, some will sound richer, some with more bass than others. At your budget there is no way you can go wrong with a 1210 as it is a good quality turntable that will last. The differences in sound, unless you have sound engineer trained ears, will be very minimal. And the major differences (if they can be called major) between equipment will only really become apparent when being compared directly against each other.
My advice to the OP would be to buy the most reliable/best built TT you can for your money. A 1210 is certainly up there in that subject.

Your previous post was
The fact is the Rega Planar 3 with an RB300 arm and Elys cartridge will sound better than a 1210, When you say well sorted does that mean it will cost more than £200
The OP has asked for a recommendation and given his budget all i`m doing is giving my opinion on audio quality, Not looks

Hey Mike, similar to yours
1) Vantage Audio PSU
2) Vantage Audio uprated bearing (on trial)
3) Iso feet
4) FF Acromat
5) AT 440 cart
Still got a few more things to add on when time/funds allow ie arm and perhaps platter. It's sounding really nice at the moment

lol, i really started something here.
I have an old hitachi A class mossfet amp thats 460w and bridgable, if i can prise it out of the grasp of one of my pals i'll use that, i was planning on getting some decent speakers to go with it at a later date, but for the time being i shall just hook the tt up to my sony surround sound system because thats what i have available, i would like to get something that has the potential to create a half decent sound, the tt is just the beginning of something i've been meaning to do for a while and just not had time.
So are we any closer to a decision as to what i should go for.

buy the most expensive rega planar you can afford with your budget would be my advice but personally for £200 i'd want to hear what i'm buying first
if you can get to the cornflake shop in windmill street, marylebone they have sound rooms where'll they'll set up anything for you to listen to - I have heard of customers taking their own speakers into the sound booths to listen to a deck or amp lol

Today i went for a curry at the local pakistani centre and got chatting with a mate and he gave me a tt, it's not fancy but it was free.
Dual CS 514 belt drive, semi automatic, he bought it in 1983 so it's a classic i'll give it a whirl for a while and see how i get on.
