Phase 1 engines use fibre gaskets, the pistons (dog bone shape) protrude above the block, these use 1.6mm gaskets
Phase 1.5 with square shaped piston crowns use 1.2mm gaskets and are steel MLS as std.
Phase 2 and later all use 0.6mm
Phase 1 and 1.5 have 47cc cylinder heads, phase 2 and later are 49cc per cylinder hence the thinner gaskets, ej25's are 51cc
You need 1.6mm, I would avoid going thinner as it will raise your compression which you don't want to do really.

I build these engines for my living and have been building them for the past 10 years, trust me your gaskets as std are 1.6mm, they would of been fibre with a steel fire ring.
3 thou is .07 of a millimeter, it won't make a difference to compression really.

As above.
Also, confusion can come about when the head gasket thickness is quoted as 'Compressed' for the C.R calcs as opposed to 'out the packet' thickness.
