I've been self employed for 3 years. Do my own tax return and have been tempted to adjust the profit figure but I work for large national companies that if they were audited and they followed the paper trail I'd be in a lot of trouble (in my mind that's how it works?).
What I think is not helping the matter is that if you do your own return there's just one box for 'profit'. Yes you need all the relevant information if the HMRC decide to audit you, but the temptation not to declare it all is pretty high when all you're faced with is that one box to put a figure into.
I've started a ltd company now and have an accountant so it's taken out of my hands.

Self employed still get their personal tax free amount (£9750 i think) as everyone else does (except those over £100k).
We still have to pay 20, or 40% tax plus class 2 NIC's and class 4 NIC's on any profit.

Paye = tax gets taken, and you ask for any "overpayment" back
Non paye = you get 100% and pay As little as you can get away with
Believe me, ALL rich people, and scroungers are non paye

thats not what i was getting at. i ment it makes such a small difference , it would not be measurable. 186666 of me payng tax equals how much phillip green avoided, now add all the big corperations ( nestle) for one and you start to comprehend the level of tax evasion/avoidance that goes on in this country, all allowed to carry on by people who probable have shares in said companies. for example the goverment minister who signed the deal to buy lights bulbs at £26 a throw that tesco supply for eighty pence , i bet he has shares in said company

But how does any of that make anyone else avoiding tax right? And it isn't an insignificant amount as has already been said ... I think you would like to believe that in much the same way illegal downloaders like to pretend what they do makes little difference to the artists, producers.
It may not make it right, but I do understand why this would frustrate the average person.

I think what he is getting at, rightly or wrongly, is it seems big companies are getting away with this on a massive scale, whilst a crackdown looms on the 'little people' just trying to get by.
It may not make it right, but I do understand why this would frustrate the average person.

**** me. Running a business or being self employed isn't difficult.
In the first year you can set off a huge amount of your costs against your earnings, even down to showing a negative amount. If you end up with a negative amount, request that your previous years tax payments are refunded to you.
Or get an accountant. You can even get online cloud based accountants who do everything for you, often cheaper than traditional accountants. Google Crunch. For what they will charge you, they will most likely get you back and more.

thank you lisa you need framing , someone else who knows how to interpritate a point inside a point, you realized that shafting the little man no mater how many of them will make no difference, the more important point is there are to many passengers in this country. 3rd class paying nothing and getting a free ride, 1st class getting it paid for them out of expences and written of thier tax bill , and buisness class (mp's) everything paid for and getting paid to ride the train, and the second class (the working tax paying daft ***** ) who have to pay for all the other classses . THATS WHATS WRONG WITH THIS COUNTRY, not some little plumber doing a couple hundred quid job for cash
As someone said ealrier the country is rotten top to bottom. it's f**Ked basically as no one seems to know right from wrong any more!

My thoughts on the government are well documented on here and not at all aligned with your supposition, but irrelevant to this discussion anyway!

To a point, Tony, that's accounted for by the tax free allowance we're all allowed to earn before tax kicks in. That's about £9k for everybody.
What we're talking about here is people who clearly think you're being an idiot if you don't avoid tax on as much of your income as humanly possible.

So, back to the original point then!
When they stop being immoral, then perhaps they can expect the guy on the street to do the same.

Urban, suppose you don't hear another story about a politician cooking the books, and the tax loopholes were closed.
Would you then declare all of your earnings for full taxation the day after?
No you wouldn't, and that's my point. Stop using other people's behaviour to justify your own theft.

I'm not hearing stories BTW - I've seen all I need to see with my own eyes!
