I have always given members on here a chance to change the way they are behaving on a thread before taking any further action. I most certainly don't think I treat people more or less fairly.

This isn't a fair comment. I came on here late last night and clicked on the thread, only to see all manner of insults thrown about by several different members. The thread had already degenerated. As such, given I didn't have a lot of time to go through it all removing posts and warning/infracting a load of people, I decided to attempt to treat people as adults and politely ask for the thread to be brought back on topic and for the insults to stop.

Ban me if you want, that's up to you. I am sometimes not sure why I keep coming back anyway given the amount of derision aimed at anyone here who tries to be honest in life.
Sometimes it really does seem to be 'someone' on SN you need to be a at least one of the following... dishonest, racist or homphobic.
Discuss that if you like!

I thought the whole point of have polices and process was to keep to them. F1 fan goes off on one after an innocuous comment and calls someone an F**king tw@t which is apparently OK. well i hope the same goes for everyone although i fear it will be to the detriment of SN and any future debates!
As i said, it appears some people are more equal that others and that is a damn shame!

Look, I don't really want to be banning anyone!
What I would like is for people to have a discussion in a civil manner without the need to personally insult each other just because they don't agree with one another.
You are all grown ups, and should be able to disagree and discuss as such, whatever the thread topic. Funnily enough, I manage to come on here and join in topics without the need to start calling people c**** etc. just because I don't like or agree with something they say.
I don't actually think this is asking too much.

Concluded from what exactly? You just can't defend yourself so resort to unfounded accusations.
As Zohan has also pointed out the obvious i'm not the only one pointing the finger at you. In fact I would hazard a guess there are plenty fed up with your drivel and inability to take what you like to dish out when other posters don't agree with you.

Yet the instigator remains unpunished which is my point Lisa Deal with the person who started the name calling and insults/abuse!

Out of curiosity, who am I personally treating differently?

I tried to have a grown up discussion with F1_fan in the computer section yet he took every opportunity to be rude and condescending.
Yet he is the first on here to be complaing about how the forum has gone downhill.
I wonder why?

It's not what I would say is OK, just as other comments in this thread haven' been. As I have said, I came on late and decided to opt for treating people fairly and giving them a chance to go back on topic. If I had come onto the thread sooner, I may have been able to nip it in the bud, but by the time I did, regardless of who started it, insults were being exchanged by several members. I didn't really want to start dishing out warnings and infractions to all those involved, so put the post in that I did.
Out of curiosity, who am I personally treating differently?

Example; Will was banned for swearing- calling people names - why, what exactly is the difference???
Lisa, i am not trying to get at you, i just see the unfairness of it all and an tired of it, letting it continue is at the cost of the SN community. Some fairness and consistency is all i want to see. Currently, it looks like you are defending the indefensible

"regardless of who started it" So trolling to get a rise and insulting people is OK, not in direct conflict with the policy on trolling/intimidating? Surely if someone 'starts it', calling someone a "f**King tw@t" - that's OK? can we now all do this and not expect a ban??? - This beggars belief. F1 Fan constantly belittles people, dishes out the insults but cannot take it and he continues with impunity. I am man enough not to go calling people "F**king tw@ts" because they do not agree with me but that is not the point is it - can i now expect the same treatment just in case i throw my toys!

As for Will, I don't know for how long altogether, I tried and tried to talk to Will about the swearing and for how long I just deleted comments in the hope he'd stop doing it. Maybe I was too fair for too long??? I didn't ban him, but he had so many chances, from my way of dealing with it (or trying) to warnings, infractions and temporary bans until it got to the point that it was pointless and he was permabanned. That certainly wasn't what I wanted to see, but some people just won't learn
The point is, I personally will always take the time to try and speak to people first. That most certainly isn't inconsistent on my part, I do it with anyone, regardless of my personal opinions of them. I have spent quite some time this week dealing with problems on here (as best as I can) and I have applied that approach to all situations. Maybe it would be better if I do just become tough, but I fear complaints would come rolling in from all directions about over moderation. It's just not my way to stomp my 'authority' down without even trying to sort a problem other ways first.
I know you may not be having a go at me, and I am not taking it personally, however, what I would say, is if you totally disagree with where I am coming from, and think I have handled this the wrong way, then post in policy about it. I can accept if I am in the wrong.

I'm not defending anybody. I have spoken with f1, so it's not a case of just turning a blind eye. Like it or not, I have my way of moderating and generally it tends to be to talk to people and hope they can see where I'm coming from regarding rules, behaviour etc. rather than ruling with an iron fist, and if that fails, then I move onto warnings. I apply this across the board and I am sure that others could confirm this if they wished to, that is entirely up to them though.

To get back on the topic of internet piracy, I can see it from both sides. On the one hand, it cost money to produce the software/film/music etc. The producers want to make a profit and will sell it at the highest rate the market will allow. From the software pirate point of view, they don't believe they are harming anyone as they haven't stolen anything. They have only copied it, and the owner still has the original. More than likely they would never have purchased it anyway.
What I don't agree with, is the extremely high multimillion pound/dollar wage that actors get. This has to be reflected in the cost of the film.
Most films eventually find their way onto the TV so can be viewed and recorded for no more than the annual license fee.

Maybe the discussion needs to be divided into two sections as I can see (just mind ) why people get mad with the price of mainstream movies etc.

Using Will as an example only because you mentioned him, it was years between him first abusing the swear filter and ending up permabanned. So it wasn't like he did it a couple of times and ban hammer came down on him. More than enough fairness, or maybe more to the point, time and leniency was shown to him.
I am not saying the above comments are OK and hopefully f1 now sees this. Hopefully that could be the end of it without the need for bans etc.

Tidgy, I know it's horrible when someone makes you look like a prize ****, but you really need to not take it so hard.
Consider it an education, you've learnt something about the legalities of book publishing and how to spell "you're".
That's a pretty god morning and probably as much as you can handle in one go.
Tomorrow we might try a talk about morality and honesty, but see how you feel after today's 'marathon session'

As above seeing as you would obviously rather spout than read...
That being said are you saying that taking a pen home from work renders one unable to criticise serial thieving ***** that evade taxes and download copyrighted material illegally?
Oh and btw the pen thing..... I am self empolyed so I take a pen home from work whenever I like thanks!

The thing is that you are focuising on big industry where there are aso hundreds of thousands of small producers getting screwed by the freeloaders.
Maybe the discussion needs to be divided into two sections as I can see (just mind ) why people get mad with the price of mainstream movies etc.
