FACT is a very strong word to use in statements like that. What actual tests (with repeatable results of course ), have you carried out to back the use of that word up? Not having a pop, just playing Devil’s advocate to your statements.
Really there is only one answer to the OP; if you can afford either the wrx or the sti go drive both cars and make your mind up

The sti only really comes into it's own after prolonged abuse, and thats only down to better brakes, stronger engine and box, which is only relevant if you plan on abusing and modding, but for general daily use most won't even get close to it's full capabilities on the daily commute.
And to be honest it's not a particularly well sorted package out of the box for the more commited driver anyway, and needs a fair few mods to make it a serious weapon, i'd save the mod money miss the newage sti out all together and go spec c personally, either that or a properly modded 450bhp type r, but all of that is irrelevant with regards the op's question.
I did drive both back to back and chose the wrx, and i'd do the same every time for a quick daily with weekend thrills they are very hard to beat for the money, but i have an sti type r in the garage for the play days. although it is currently in bits and will be that way for good a while.

ok Mr advocate, peak torque comes in sooner on a wrx ppp and is higher, read it on some ppp test in a mag, do you seriously believe that a standard sti would be quicker? it will out brake the wrx after about 5 min but again not by much, and it won't out brake mine with my ap's on it.

Having spent thousands and thousands of pounds on it my personal experience tells me to start off with something as strong as is possibly available and save grief\time\money later on. However I'll stick to my earlier advice; if the OP can afford them both go drive both of them and then decide. After all its not about how quick they are on paper its about how they feel to drive that puts the smaile on your face and the sti is very different to the wrx

Just a little bump, sold my 330ci yesterday for 4500, so now am looking to get an impreza, only want to spend 4500 as insurance is due on the 19th, and thats going to be a grand, plus with christmas its an expensive month!
Dont think im going to bother with an STI, so will look for a prodrived wrx, or a wrx lightly modded, decat + remap.
Was also looking at a civic type r, but i think if i buy one everytime i see a suburu i will regret not getting one, has anyone here owned a type r?

Standing start, it all depends on the driver, had a play with a couple before, and different outcomes both times, although not by much! Civic would of had me in the bends though without a doubt! which is what i want from the next car, something that handles well, as well as being quick, the 330 was a one trick pony.

Dont know what your impreza was running, and if you are still looking for power, but i rekon you will get bored of the 330 very quickly, it is quick, but doesn't feel quick, if you know what i mean. Whereas the M3 is ment to be a totally different animal, if you could afford the m3 i would 100% go for that, but then it all depends on what your looking for in a car.
Shaun, i hope i agree with you after buying my next car, i do want to run a fast jap car before life takes over with a mortgage and kids etc, now is the perfect time for me to do it.

It's more for the mrs really she'll be driving it more than me as I've moved right next to my work so only drive a couple of times a week and usually the kids are in the back anyway so just want something comfortable and still relatively quick. Don't let running costs put you off an impreza they're not that bad mine was running 330 bhp and would average 20-24 mpg plus was one of the most reliable cars I've owned

Save an extra grand or so and you could have one.

That is seriously cheap, something must be wrong with it
Staying away from bmws for a while myself, had them last 3 years, and fancy a change, narrowed it down to civic type r or an wrx..
Sean, im glad to hear that it an impreza wont be as expensive to run as i have been told, i can live with 20mpg, have been doing so for the last 3 years, and im sure a wrx with less bhp would be averaging a little higher.
Good shout with the 330 though, it is a perfect machine for what you describe, when i am a family man myself, i reckon i will be going back to german, as for now with a missus who doesnt really care about cars, as long as she can get a lift home from work jap is the way to go

I had a 330ci MSport convertible before the Type R Impreza. The 330 is a very nice cruising car, plenty of grunt but really not that exciting, before the 330 I had a blob wrx vltd, the BMW was a better day to day car for comfort but as a weekend car the Impreza was better, a bit more of a laugh

Funny I've just had the 520d msport and this morning I'm getting the 330d and so far not impressed at all
Boring as hell, after over 2 years with my Scoobynet I still enjoy getting in it, and it still turns heads.
I know where I think I,ll be keeping my money. Good luck

Done exactly what you are thinking of.
Had a 330ci, bought after I had to see my first Impreza and like you have said, fantastic car but dull.
Had it a year, including getting stuck in the snow at the beginning of this year.
Glad I when back to a scoob and although I miss some of the creature comforts, I don't regret it at all.
