I tried that for a 62 in a 40, using a slow bus as my "defense", yup it didn't work

The letter shows that upto 86mph in a 70mph is the speed awareness course. The letter also says that they have already gone to my company to obtain my details etc so had to tick the EU box, fill out my licence number sign and return.

Read else where that 96mph is a court summons & 94 is £60 and 3points.
I won't know until I get a letter back. Any one know how long it takes to come back?

I don't EVER speed through the road works and always move to the middle lane if possible when even I see a car / lorry on the hard sholder. I would say that I am genually a safe driver and the timings on that day were bad. I was running late, overtaking several lorries as I came down the hill, Was slowing down and in the slow lane when I clocked him.

IF it did go to court I would explain that if I lost my licence I would loose my job & my house and then the ******* on scoobynet would pay for me to live in a council house.

I went through those variable speed limit gantries with the hidden cameras on the M25. Was doing 70mph exactly, keeping to the limit then they went down to 60mph for no obvious no reason whatsoever. No one slowed down including myself, then they went to 50mph, still no reason, very few cars on the road (mid afternoon). Dropped down to 60mph as I got a bit spooked then they went back up to 60, then 70mph. Not received anything through the post despite reading that they were all now set to 10% +2mph.

That is bad luck. I really dont think it will be loosing licence time. 96mph+ is where courts get involved and even then they may still only issue 3 points.

Above 95 is prison time. 30 days sharing a cell with your new friend Bubba.

Don't drop the soap....

Sorry but that's just not true. Up to 29mph over the speed limit (99mph) is points, but... Could be a ban as its close and its up to the descression of the police and courts as you will also be automatically reported for dangerous driving at the same time.

Anything over that, I.e. (100mph) will be a ban when it goes to court, unless you can provide a case to the courts that your car is essential for others I.e. transporting sick mother to hospital etc. But, its still the courts decision.

Anything from 110mph upwards is jail time.

I was 0.5mph off a sentence when I got done at 109.5. Was lucky, only got a ban and a large fine. Completely my fault, was many years ago and won't be doing it again!

110mph upwards is also not necessarily jail time, especially if it's your first offence. A friend was prosecuted for 126 yes 126mph on the M25 and received a 56 day ban (apparently at the time the maximum for a first time offender) and a hefty fine due to his income. I think jail for speeding is still highly, highly unlikely if you aren't resisting being stopped etc.

Also true. As said, above 110 is not guaranteed jail, but is certainly a possibility at those speeds and courts will consider it. They are coming down harder on speeding these days so band are getting longer and acceptable limits are changing.

My first offense at 109.5 got me a 42 day ban and Large fine coupled with large solicitors fees!

Do you consider the money you spent on a solicitor as wasted? Did it really make any difference? I'm highly sceptical of legal representation as a rule.

Yep. Completely wasted! Wish I’d have represented myself now! He was completely useless, forgot half the things I told him and completely ballzd it up! Can say I would have done 200% better.

Was advised by someone if you get a solicitor then the courts tend to appreciate this and you get off lighter. That turned out to be complete *****. The courts gave me the max possible ban & fine for my offence.

And I still had to pay the useless ****.

Sounds like when i went to court as a mere slip of a thing many moons ago, can't even rememeber what it was for now, i was advised to go in a suit to look more respectful. That just served to make the judge realise i had a decent job and he could fine me more. I just wonder where all this "good advice" comes from sometimes.

Yep. Went in a suit with my solicitor and they gave me the max fine! Go figure. haha

Guess it’s all the word of mouth rubbish that passed between mates. Turns out its all rubbish and your MUCH better off representing yourself and being honest with the courts.

I still feel like my solicitor completely ripped me off.

No - It was a couple of years ago now, but clear day, no roadworks, therefore 70mph limit on A5 dual across Anglesey.
I was v v late for the ferry to Dublin and pushed it a bit too much
(thats the frickin A5 for you! - the sooner they dual the rest of that feckin road the better)

Didnt you already have a letter?

£100 increase and you're chuffed? £500 over the 5 years plus the fine is a stupidly disproportionate amount to have to pay for the offence.

I had a letter to say if it was me reply and await points or court.
I don't pay insurance as I have a company car but I always thought points would really sting you. £10 extra a month is nothing for being bad

I guess thats a positive way of looking at it but still think that the total people are expected to pay for speeding when it is now so common is not right (if I get caught it would be £100 for me as well). The government set the fine at £60 because thats a reasonable amount, then the insurance companies wade it and use it as an excuse to pile £100s on over a few years.

If the governments fine was 3 points and £560 there would be uproar.

It's just the government's way of letting somebody else do their dirty work for them.
Nobody really complains, and the gov gets a revenue from taxing the insurer's profits.
Government = nice people with high tolerance and small punishments
Insurance companies = nasty bu99ers that cost you money and give nothing in return.
