The speeding fines around this part of the West Country are comparatively massive, I just hope I never get caught anyway!

Shocking attitude really.

Speeding motorists do cause accidents. Especially young, performance car driver's.
I was no angel and often enjoyed the performance of the cars I used to have. But I wouldn't have complained if I had been caught. Goes with the territory.

I must admit though, having a child certainly slows you down. I often find myself pootling along in the slow lane at 50-60mph if my son is in the car.

Surprised your insurance went up that much. I had 3 points (years back now) and the insurers said it didn't make any real difference. I even did an online quote when I was waiting and it hardly changed.

3% of motoring accidents are accredited to speed being the cause......I would also put the question how many accidents are caused by driving a car being so under powered you can't get out the way.....prior to my scoob I had my fair share of **** doing 45mph in a 60, you go to overtake and they speed up so you can't get by and nearly cause an accident.....speed and power isn't all bad!

my 1.7 diesel astra isn't really power phoned the boss to say i am now a club member and he said nothing needs to be done.

I'd agree generally that power can get you out of a tight fix sometimes but it's better at getting you into a jam.

In a slow car? Don't overtake then, it's not really going to save you that much time anyway and do lives really depend upon your getting somewhere 1 minute earlier?

I do get what you say though. What's probably more of a nightmare are things like the shoddy breaks you can have on lower specced cars, that can be bloody dangerous when someone in a better specced car decides to slam on the breaks, sometimes even standard breaking distances are irrelevant then! (2 second rule etc.)

Ignoring the cause of accidents but assuming that they are going to happen anyway,as they do as a daily occurrence, do you accept that the faster you drive, the less reaction time you have to avoid an accident, and secondly that if you do have one, the faster you are travelling, the more damage and/or injury is likely to be caused?

Of course you can do more damage at high speed, but the likelihood of walking out of a crash at 60/70 is no better than your odds at 100 in my view.....I've lost enough friends already at 22 through car crashes and they were all 50 or below!! Its not the speed that kills, its the condition of the road.....You are safer taking your subaru to its absolute top end on the M1 at 3am than doing 40mph in a 60mph when theres snow about.....but one gets you locked up and one is classed as safely under the limit......speed is only one factor in a million!/..........but you are right that you cannot deny that higher speeds increase braking distances etc

In general, I agree. But the friends you have lost, would you say they were driving too fast for the conditons?
Or did they just crash doing 30mph in a 30mph zone on sheet ice?

I suspect the former.

And of course you are safer on the M1 at night doing 100mph than doing 50mph in 30mph. There'a not much to hit on the M1!

What really pisses me off is when you see 1.1 litre hatch backs having the **** revved out of them in congested areas. They usually have 3 or 4 young lads in them trying to show off.
