Just have a pay as you go digital meter fitted, best thing i ever did. When the buggers all of a sudden started taking £300.00 out,i said right one way to keep in control is change me over to pay as you go,that way you're only paying for what you are actually using,no sudden surprises by letter saying we're going to DD you an extra £100.00 a month etc.

You do that, because something isn't quite right. Over night you have what on? A fridge/freezer, bedside clock? Charging phone? Alarm? Home phone?
However, most of your Economy 7 usage could be just before 8am. Depending on your shower and what time you take it in the morning and for how long could possibly be a reason for adding significantly to you Economy 7 total of 4KW. A 9KW electric shower would equate to circa 2.25KW for a 15 minute shower before 8am. Maybe you use a hair dryer and straighteners too? Then there's the boiling of the kettle for fun and 12 slices of toast. Only you know what you legitimately use though.
12KW in a day (800 watts/hour) when you're at work for say maybe 10 hours of the 15 hours would take some doing unless, like me, you have ponds running for instance, or for the 5 hours you are at home you leave a range oven on, take 4 showers for 30 minutes each...

Yes, what had actually happened was that a few years previously we had the house completely rebuilt (large 5/6 bed house over 4 floors)
It took 6/7 months to complete, within that time EON read the meter (twice), obviously the usage was a fraction of the actual usage when it was a family house
But they based the next 4 to 5 years on that rebuild period usage
When we came to settle up, as we were renting it and moving to the country there was a 5 k shortfall
In the end it was just a large house and used a lot of electricity, but as I said in my first post they took half in settlement
We also never ever got billed for gas - but that is another story

I've been on Smart meters for some time now so there isn't necessarily any need to take charge of my own readings any more unless there is a drastic change in units used, which is simple to spot.

The thing was when I asked for a man to come round and check the house etc
Really nice guy btw, he admitted that EON had actually read the meter, after we had moved back in, but because the reading was so much higher they assumed something was wrong and continued to bill the lower amount
