"iPhone 5 is the fastest smartphone" Oh how the nay sayers laughed when I made that casual statement.

Well sorry boys, but that laptop on your ear just got a drubbing.

One surprise for me was the 4S beating the Galaxy S3, good work Apple.

Well as you can probably tell by the number of pages and views on this thread - top ten this year - people do give a **** and up until the device came out most of those people were owners of Samsung phones trying to belittle Apple's finest. Must sting a bit.

I looked at an iPad yesterday and was quite impressed. Then I came to my senses and have set my heart on a nexus 7.

I have the 5 and the wife has the 4s running ios6! Can't be arsed reading all that. In layman a terms, what should my phone do quicker? I've done back to back tests of both phones and they seem identical at everything???

I'm pretty sure the tests were against the Exynos4 chip which is quad-core?

Really? You have sat there with two mobile phones to see which is faster?

Why?

This thread is pushing towards 1000 posts which mostly consist of people ***** waving at who makes the fastest phone. I simply wanted to see if there is any real world difference and I can't see any - that ok by you?

Anything that has the word "geekbench" in, forget, its not a viable test, far too iratic and the figures dont add up very well.
To demsonstrate.... Iphone 5 is what, 1600, the SGS3 is 1500, well after rattling off about 7 or 8 tests, mine varied between 1200 and 2000, great bit of software that one
What they need is a good independent test, browser v browser, no good, are they using wifi? Are they using 3G? either way its going to give +/- over several tests on each device.
Also after running geekbench, only one of my cores was running at full, 2 others were are 200 & 400mhz and one was in deep sleep, fantastic
Independent tests will be out over the next week or two which will demonstrate both A9 chipset handsets doing what they do best

I don't see anything on my 4S that needs speeding up, no doubt that extra processing power will be put to use as apps are updated to make use of it. Console quality graphics being pushed via Airplay to your TV could get interesting.

What happened to the days of walking into a mobile phone shop and picking up a tiny £150 pay as you go device? ..thinking that the smaller the phone, the better.. Now they are getting bigger and bigger, and people spend so much time and research into what phone they want, the specs and what bloody processing speed tests it can do, it's comparable to buying a car.... Jeeez

I'm pointing out that the tests done so far are not accurate and until they are put under proper test conditions (ie all done the same and not just on an app download), you wont get any proper answers.... BUT considering they are both A9 chipsets and one is a quad core running 40% quicker per core and one a duel core running 1ghz per core, I can see it being an interesting comparison

iPhone 5 is smaller, yet bigger. I don't understand these people who want to hold a laptop to their ear.

How can the testing ever be "all done the same" when they run different operating systems. That's what you never seem to grasp, the iPhone can have lower numbers and still perform better, hard to grasp I know, but proved time and time again. So you'll just wait and wait, hoping that some test comes out where your phone is on top, then you'll get all excited and then the testing will be fair. Just suck on some Lemons Tony, get it over with.

The CPU's share the same architecture Jack or have you not figured that out?
That means the basics are going to be similar on the hardware, ok?
The software may be different, so thats not a problem, we are testing hardware here
Suck on your own lemons here Jack

Get back up your pole.

"The chip also appears to use dual general purpose ARM cores, although it is known that Apple didn't use either of ARM's stock Cortex-A8 or Cortex-A15 designs. Instead, Apple developed its own custom variant optimized for its own uses. "

Yes Apple used the A9 chip, you know, like the A9 chip in my S3, except mine is a quad core

First paragraph Tony.

"The A6 processor that powers Apple's newest iPhone is using neither rehashed Cortex A9 cores, nor the upcoming Cortex A15, but an original design based on ARM's armv7s architecture."

And they say its based on the A15 in alot of stories, its acutally an A9 that has had quite a bit of reconfiguring, some bright spark broke down the code that samsung put on their chips
Oh also do you know that these are all ArmV7 chips? mine is a V7l, great isnt it
