I don't even know where to start with that!

In all seriousness, I don't mind o2, but the 3g signal I got on my old Blackberry and now HTC is quite poor good in most places. Plus they seem quite expensive compared to everyone else.
Then again, I always get through to someone if I have to. I suppose you get what you pay for.

So, could I about to become an iSheep? Let me practice my 'bahaaa' noises.

Pffft, fandroids

A rectangle is 2 dimensional... these are quasi-rectangular cuboids. Get your facts straight

If true I am pleasently surprised.
You could have had that surprise years ago - sorry year ago - of course you'll have to use some ****ty app that likely has adverts, but that's the price you pay for being fussy.

Isn't the customer always right though Jack? Even Apple has started to listen to their customers rather than telling them what they want.
That was one of the key reasons why I didn't want an iPhone. Call me fussy, it was my choice where I got music from, not theirs.
Now they have listened (but not advertised the fact very well as it may well lose them money) I may well be a potential customer.

I have a good 8 months to see how good the iPhone really is, as opposed to believing one mans **** mutterings on a pokey motoring forum.

Apple have always listened to their customers, it's the haters that get ignored. If you do get an iPhone do try iTunes though, it's actually very good… Mac experience only.

You do realise that iTunes is only the software for uploading your music to your iphone? You can buy your mp3’s from anywhere like Amazon and still use iTunes to transfer. Likewise for your own mp3’s ripped from cd’s.

So I can't just transfer my music from a memory stick to the iPhone without having to upload onto itunes?

You don't need iTunes to transfer files to the iPhone. Drag and drop if you're a luddite.

Vodafone called me today to offer a new contract/25% off as I'm apparently a very good customer.

Turned out the chap couldn't beat my current deal with Vodafone, which was nice. But got chatting, as you do. He was peed off as his new iPhone 5 is scratched up already on the back and he has always been careful. It also doesn't work with his car or his nightstand alarm click/dock thingy. Going back to the 4S was his comment or maybe even an S3.

So there you go, a through and through Apple fan who doesn't want an iPhone 5 anymore.

Of course, I'll be accused of making it up and hence I'm anti-Apple, or some such garbage (even though I own and use five Apple products daily).

Obvious Jack. Yes, you are right. Stupid me. I should have asked him to call you so you could tell him why him being unhappy with the new iPhone means he is anti-Apple and hence an idiot. Of course, I'm so stupid.

Or it could be, and I'm obviously an idiot for suggesting it, he was actually unhappy with the new iPhone.

Mmmm, I wonder.....

Easy now. Don't take things to serious, no one called you an idiot. I do however think the bloke on the phone is quite likely an idiot.

That's pointless. maps.google.com or wait for google to get their finger out and release an app. Or just crack on, can't say that I'm missing the old one but can say I've been making use of the new.

That's the issue. iTunes is inherently rubbish unless its on OSX.

Considered getting a new Macbook Pro but OSX isn't compatible with the majority of the software I use so I'd only use OSX for iTunes which seems like a silly price to use iTunes.

But will the new one still be designed to run poorly on Windows? I expect so.

Half the problem is 'last one on' syndrome, take any of the machines that it runs poorly on, put on a fresh copy Windows, install iTunes and it will run just fine.

Apple will have to try and come to terms with that choice, somehow You absolutely do have to use iTunes when you first get the phone.

But then its a piece of ****. Just use it to back up your phone and apps and contacts. When I got my 5, I connected my phone. Pressed "restore" and all the apps, photos, music etc I had on my 4 were put on my 5 for me (Of course contacts etc had already updated through the cloud).

I must connect my phones to iTunes about once a month, if that, and thats to **** around with changing what music is on there. Its as tricky as connecting my phone, importing music into itunes (I keep a seperate central library of music in windows) and of couse it backed up my phone - If the phone ever ***** up, I can restore a new one to exactly the same state - thats pretty useful.

Aside from initial set up, its perfectly possible to never connect your phone to your PC again, and do it all through the cloud/ over wifi if you are so inclined.

You can set them up without plugging into itunes. You can also back your device up to the cloud and restore from the cloud and so again itunes is not needed for that, including getting a new device and restoring from an old one over the cloud. The one thing you do need it for though is if you have a collection of music on your pc that you want to put on the phone although even that can be avoided if the phone is jailbroken. You could in theory jailbreak just do this and then un jailbreak.

Ah, didn;t realise you didnt need iTunes these days from scratch. I'm just so used to just plugging them in initially, and to be fair, its absolutely zero bother, and I like to have a local backup of my phone on my machine

Me too and it's quicker than over the air but apart from that I don't really use itunes. My iphone and ipad must get plugged in all of about twice a year. The only time itunes has been used in anger was putting all my music on the iphone when I first got it. The Wife uses icloud for everything and has had no issues with backing up and then restoring to a new device that way and I was impressed at how well it worked from getting the phone out the box to having everything on it without ever going anywhere near her laptop.

Having recently had a macbook pro for a few weeks I can say that itunes in OSX compared to Windows is completely different in how well it works. In Windows it's clunky and half the time wireless syncing doesn't work as the devices don't show up. In OSX they never once dropped connection to itunes wirelessly and copying the library from Windows to OSX and then running itunes just worked. No fiddling about, it was a straight copy and all worked perfectly. I liked itunes on the Mac but dislike it immensely on my Windows laptop.
