9/12 Apple Day
#1291
I think the point is (well for me anyway) that Apple took away something that worked and replaced it with something of their own that does not work, a very arrogant thing to do, they should have waited until it was ready or released it as a turn by turn sat nav with 3D flyovers.

Apple maps is crap, even Tim Cook realises that now, so much so that he is recommending the fanboys to use other services. The thing is, since Apple maps needs people to use it to improve their service and Tim Cook is telling everyone to use something else, it looks like Apple maps is likely to remain crap for some time yet.

Tony, no one here is saying Apple is perfect . Jack certainly isn't.
We all agree Apple Maps isn't as good as it should be. Its not "crap", but IMO (using both, unlike a lot of the detractors on here who don't actually have an iphone running IOS6 and are merely regurgitating heresay) its not as good as as Google maps.
But so what? Google maps is still available, working just as it did and for free. You don't even need to go near itunes to get it. What's the issue? The "as supplied" weather widget is hopeless, yet no one whinges on about that
Seriously, am I missing something here

On the hills/mountains/forests/wherever a phone (smart or otherwise) is for communication and only communication. Basic survival concept. Dedicated GPS device if you don't want to use old school maps.
No point knowing where you are with your broken legs only to find that you cant call it in because your battery is flat after you've been dicking about on it all day with some not quite as accurate as it could be app.

Plus you can register your phone with the mountain rescue services, that helps quite a bit but the GPS can come in very handy, though I have not had to use it yet, and hopefully will never need to.

It certainly does.
t Apple, we strive to make world-class products that deliver the best experience possible to our customers. With the launch of our new Maps last week, we fell short on this commitment. We are extremely sorry for the frustration this has caused our customers and we are doing everything we can to make Maps better

Substandard is not what it says at all. Falling short of Apple customers expectations does not automatically make something substandard, the expectations of Apple customers are very high indeed. Lets say your McLaren is delivered with a flat tire, you'd be disappointed and McLaren would have fallen short of your expectations but your car isn't automatically a substandard product.

I don't need to look in the Mirror, I look at and sucessfully use iOS Maps, it's you and your ilk that have been looking in The Mirror and believing what you've read.

80% less data than the old maps. Even more reason to use the new maps.

it’s largely pointless to lament that Google should be more like Apple or vice-versa. The two companies are entirely different from one another and they both provide awesome innovations that make all our lives better. Just let them be themselves and enjoy the fruits of their labors.

Good article. I liked this bit;
On the evidence of this thread, Mission: Accomplished.
Let’s start with Apple’s strategy because it’s relatively straightforward. Apple basically wants consumers to fall in love with every aspect of Apple hardware and software
