I very much doubt that the same individuals that were keeping a lid on matters in the seventies are the same people that are doing the job now, most will be retired or dead, I mean, if they were senior people they would have been older and it was thirty plus years ago.

It always seems hollow when someone who wasnt involved apologises for something, Like Tony Blair apologising for slavery, maybe if someone who did ignore the rumours is still there/alive then perhaps they can do some apologising but it is highly unlikely anyone is going to come forward for that.

A sexually deviant man took advantage of his fame and fortune to indulge his preference for young girls, he got away with it, he died at 84 without having to answer for his crimes which is tragic but no amount of recriminations or compensation will change that, I cant see the point in awarding people compensation from the license payers money, shouldnt they be suing Savilles estate ?

Savile was a devout Catholic, what a surprise

i mean, is it possible to join that religon without being a kiddy fiddler

I suppose in the confessional, when he confessed his sins, the listening priest could have a good old w4nk too

I don't believe these allegations against Jimmy Savile. I met him in Leeds General Hospital in the 1980s and he seemed very nice.

Next people will be telling me he wasn't qualified to perform my prostate examination.

Do you honestly believe that taking part in paedophilia is part of Catholic teaching?

Do you think that someone brought up in and who follows Catholic teachings to the letter would carry out such disgraceful actions?

The problem now is that people are wanting to sue the NHS and the BBC.

So all the latest set of victims, it will be difficult to ascertain the truth. If anyone has even been in the same building as him as a teenager they will be thinking that they can get money.

For example, if you want to grope teenage girls, is it common that you would be interested in prepubescent boys? I wouldn't have thought so ...

Les,

without going into the absurd traditions and practices of the Catholic Church, such as the confessional, the general culture, which seems to allow this stuff to flourish because you get a weekly forgiving and resetting of your sins, ready to carry on the next week

surely only a fool can deny the sheer extent of child sex abuse in the Catholic Church - and this goes right to Rome is a scandal – and would seek to examine exactly why this is so

just why are so many men and women in the Catholic Church child abusers

My mother in law has never forgiven the Nuns at her convent school, her stories are truly shocking

and my post was in reaction to the pathetic inevitability that someone would systemically betray a position of trust (Like the Catholic Priesthood) and abuse children, would also be a devout Catholic

Sorry, I have 5 children and feel pretty strongly about this

I thought there was pretty broad agreement that the relatively high prevalence among the Catholic church as compared with other denominations was in large part due to the fact that only in the former are the priesthood/churchmen sworn to celibacy (not to mention abstinence from self-gratification, as if being forbidden from having sex with other people wasn't bad enough).

Is there any evidence at all that Savile was more than averagely devout (which these days means barely a tickbox-worthy level of religiousness)? Discounting the celibacy factor already mentioned above, is there really any evidence that Catholics in general are more prone to this sort of thing than other faith groups, or non-believers?

none, other than I heard it reported on the radio,

and if I have got it wrong, I posthumously apologise to Mr Savile

it’s one thing being accused of raping children, but I admit, being accused of being a devout catholic is a step to far
