Try adjusting your heater fan to maximum or turn it off all together

Have you tried closing the air vents? Some time back I had some debris that had somehow got into one of mine, vaguely gear related because the faster the car went went the more it whistled.

still pursuing the matter really fed up with it, i think maybe diff or gearbox issue, although it doesnt crunch or nothing everything is tight, had a new clutch and flywheel fitted not long back aswell ruling that out........ someone must have the same problem? dont want to rebuild the box/diff, hoping for a easy fix

Could it be an earthing problem causing the sound to come from the passenger door speaker?

seen this on 3 scoobs 1 being my own, my one and a m8's the cause of it was split gasket, mine was at the BOV to the intercooler and my m8's was the one at the alloy pipework under the cooler before the Y pipe, another of my m8's had a whistling once above 3000 rpm it turned out to be a crack in the usual place on the VF at the waistgate thankfully he had just bought the car from a dealer 2nd hand and the warranty is paying for a new turbo

intresting reply, ive not long changed my bov gasket so im ruling that out, was the 'y' pipe gasket obvious when he looked at it? my vf35 probally is cracked like the rest of them do but it seems like the whistle is coming more from the centre console area towards the passenger footwell...... also im boosting to 1.5 bar peak on hard acelaration then settling @ 1.1 bar (standard boost)

thanks for your reply gives me more avenues to go down

Have you taken it to a garage or given any body a ride in the car who is familiar with imprezas and the noises? Maybe go to local meet one day and ask for some opinions. It's been there ages so it's obviously not disastrous.

Is that the correct characteristics of a standard Sti or ppp map ???

Does the boost peak and fall off pretty quickly ?? If so i had a similar problem which turned out be a leak. In my case the turbo to intercooler pipe.

I'm not too sure what the ppp map boosts at, I do know that mine isn't ppp as it's a parallel import, but yes it does drop quite quickly

Ok so I've done some more fishing around and I'm thinking maybe fuel pump? As the noise gets louder with throttle, can anyone confirm or explain what sort of noises they make?

It wouldn't be behind the glove box for sure dude that's the back of the car under the seat, you should hear the pump when you first flick your ignition on priming. If it's getting weak or lazy then it may start to buzz / hum.

Yea under the little plate, I've tried all sorts now, so just covering all bases, some days I think footwell glove box etc I just don't know anymore

Im going to rip up the back seats and drive around to see if the noise intensifies, I really don't want to take it to a dealer/specialist..... spent enough this month already on things,

found this description and this describes my issue to a "T" and yes still hunting that gremlin

More accurate description of my issue:

Upon light acceleration, I hear a noise very similar to a bad stereo/electric ground. A very persistent squeeky/whining/high'ish pitched sound. It's incredibly difficult to transcribe a sound but that's as close as I can get. (I would stick to the bad stereo/electric ground sound.)

Details:
-Pitch does not change with engine or car speed. (Begins @ ~2krpm)
-Sound does not get louder with engine or car speed. (Begins @ ~2krpm)
-Occurs in all gears and also neutral revving.
-Comes on with very very light throttle (just enough to keep the car going) and it seems persistent no matter how hard I push the gas.
-Sound will go away as soon as I'm off the gas. Actually, the sound does seem to linger a bit after I'm off the gas. It's not nearly as noticeable, but I can still hear it ever so slightly.
-Tried keeping stereo at zero volume AND completely off, and it seemed to make no difference.

I'm fairly confident it's not any normally occurring mechanical sounds: intake/turbo, transmission, diffs, etc. This is not something I've heard before in this STi or others.

If anyone had this happen to them, I'd sure like some input.
