Let me spell it out for you another way:
In the last 100 years, the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere has risen sharply. At the same time, obesity rates have also risen. Therefore, surely pollution causes obesity!
I am not saying Hawking is wrong in his assessment, I'm just saying his conclusions might not be right either and a critical thinker would think twice before swallowing someone's opinion as truth.
