Osborne - I'm too posh to travel Standard Class!!
#31
Politicians are employed to represent us, to do the best for us, not to trample all over us and think they are better than the rest of us. To those who think this is a non-story, I think you need to see the bigger picture - this is not about a train ticket.

Total tosh, all of it. He got on a train, then paid for an upgrade.
Big F' in deal.
I'd say it just might have been some kind of story if he was Transport Minister, but he isn't.
I say we get the kind of people running the country we deserve, and if all we can do is carp on about crap, no wonder they don't have time to get any work done.
Pay them more, and have professional people, then let them get on with it.

What is it about then?

I must backtrack a bit on what I said - it seems the press have about 100 different versions of what went on, but it now appears he paid for the upgrade and carried on in 1st class - contrary to the initial reports that were in the media and hence in my head.
HAD it been the case that he refused to pay to upgrade to 1st (which basically was what was initally reported) then I'd stand by what I said - it was not about the ticket, it was about the attitude of those in office towards those they represent.
But as it stands, it sounds like he just didn't want to muck it with the rest of the great unwashed and just upgraded to first class - I can't say I blame him.

if it was true, that he inisisted on staying in 1st class on a 2nd class ticket then fine, that is not on
but if, as seems now to be more accurate, he simply sat down in 1st and sent a flunky to upgrade the ticket - which virgin confirms, then a bit of a non story
it is basically the media (originally twitted by a ITV journo) self masterbating about it

As usual.
Being in the motor trade, we read The Sun, as it's the law.
They have T*ts, apparently.

I would expect - and demand - that, if, Osborne genuinely feels that we are all in it together, that he actually makes sure he IS, at all time, init with us plebs in standard class!!
Why should we pay for him and his man servants to travel 1st Class?!

Last time I traveled standard, it was bloody impossible to do anything, packed full of stag do's and screaming kids - absolute bedlam!

So he has a table to put a laptop on? So he can see the person he's speaking to about the economy of one of the financial capitals of the World? Because there's more space and a comfortable chair affording the opportunity to arrive at his destination refreshed? Perhaps I'm being a bit radical.

1. I support(ed) New Labour, the recent incarnation are definitely NOT New Labour!
2. I am doing the opposite of discrediting Osbourne
3. If you want to talk politics, silly plays on words are best left alone!

Apart from the noise, the stink and the lousy service, one of my many sons had to go to the Midlands for a sixth form conference. We saved £100 by flying him up there with a 20 mile taxi ride at the other end.
I'm amazed Osborne gets on a bloody train at all, never mind cattle class.

The government seriously need to get to grips with the press. Their media management has been shambolic.
This is an area that they could take a leaf out of Alistair campbells book.
If they allow the press to continually spin, and define their policies, as a government they are doomed

You can't work in standard class but you can in first. The upgrade is therefore cheap at the price.
It's easily justifiable to anyone with half an ounce of sense.
