Mine was just a stock 1.8 with good suspension and really good brakes. I have a jackson supercharger kit for it but not yet fitted as I am now building an mx5 kit car called a mev exocet.

The wider track of the Clio cup allowed bigger wheels a better stance and grip went up as a result so from that respect although you are planning on stripping it out and changing suspension components it might still be the better buy as its a better base to build up from, because if you wanted to have the same width track on the regular model then you would need to change a lot of parts. The cup also binned the ABS system in the 172 not sure about the 182. I know the driving position in the clio is awkward so dependent on your frame you may not like it.
Also I noticed you were mentioning putting slick tyres on, this is not a good idea unless you are planning on pretty much upgrading everything bushes wise and suspension wise not just going for coilovers. Reasons for this is that the tyres are so grippy compared to what the standard parts were designed for that they will fail as they wont be able to cope with the extra stresses placed upon them from hard cornering that the slick tyres would allow.
With the mx-5 the 1.8 is the more powerful unit 146bhp compared to 115bhp. As for a previous comment about weight difference between the 1.6 and 1.8 its very little believe its less than 100kg when coupled to more bhp the heavier 1.8 is still quicker and there is more upgrades available (just) for the 1.8. Dependent on how much more power you are looking to run from the mx-5 brakes wise you wouldn't need to do much expect change to a track biased pad and uprated disks with braided hoses and race fluid.
My personal choice would be the mx-5 a more reliable car to start with lots of potential and the joy of rear wheel drive so you have the choice to hoon around and slide it should you choose to. The clio is an immensely capable car though and they are quicker in standard form. Alot is going to be personal choice I would suggest get a test drive in both and see which suits you the best you might get in one and dislike it therefore putting you in the path of the other.

I currently have a 1990 Black V-Spec Mk1 1.6 with a 5 speed but no LSD.
It's lighter than the 2/2.5/3, is as powerful as some of the UK Mk1 1.8 but being JDM as more toys. You can get a 133 BHP 1.8 JDM car for added fun.
This may help.

Think I'm going to opt for a mk1 or 2 1.8 jdm and change all the running gear anyway so non of the specials are needed, like the blisteins, nardi wheel and all the fancy interiors.
I've read that gaz coilovers are the best to go for or the mister r and tien flex.
What have you done to yours? You need a supercharger lol, any pics?

Another vote for mx5 here, I have one as a track toy, currently in the process of fitting sparco sprint 5 seats, 4 point titon harnesses and a tr lane roll bar. They are so much fun to drive. Mine is the 1.8is with torsen lsd.

Keeping it N/A for now, its supposed to be the cheap fun car but prob spent more on bits for it than the scooby this year! Dont have any pics in current form, only original ones from the sale ad, only cost £995 though. To the OP, dont wait until the spring to buy one, the prices will rise!

The next pic shows why i dont use my scooby on track and why sometimes its good to start with a cheapish trackcar
The spoiler was a garage vary spoiler
This is what happened when i spun and hit the tyre wall. It was on my first track day to typical but done 10 since then.
Would never forgive myself if i damaged my baby...

Tbh the mx5 will not be a road car at all just track so no costs for insurance, tax or mots so will save a bit of money and if it breaks then still have my daily drive (impreza ATM but plans to get rid and buy a jeep for towing).
I'll keep my eye out for a bargain over Xmas and if I see a bargain might just buy one as they might go up in spring as someone said earlier, but there's loads for bargain prices ATM so bit confused

Tbh I'm looking forward to buying a stock clean rust free one and doing the project bit by bit instead of buying a ready made one, takes the joy out of the project and can at least buy my preffered mods.
The turbos and superchargeres can pick them up for around £1k second hand with full kit off the Mazda forums.
