Comet - in trouble?
#31
Haven't bought anything from comet for more than 5 years, in the past when I have tried to buy anything there they never have any stock apart from display items and I'm told to come back later in the week.
With service like that I'm not surprised they are going to be fair and don't care either.

Got my Commodore 64 from the Bramhall shop, my kids think I am mental as I have mentioned it a couple of times as we have driven past where it used to be, now they make a point of taking the **** about it

Don't agree entirely. There will always be people who actually want to see the goods they are buying and if PC World and others can roughly match on-line sources they should be OK but their margins will be slim. I think there were just too many electrical stores around and Comet were always at the bottom end of the list. I have used them quite a bit over the years but you had to be careful as about half their white goods on display were dented

In Comet at the moment for a new docking station for the kitchen; nothing more than 10% off the BOSE which I would have achieved anyway. The Enemy's now looking at irons.

I expect the discounts are set to increase as the less "desirable" products get left of the shelves in the coming days/weeks. 10% is still good on the high demand items though.

Have just had a nightmare with this. Our oven when capput a couple of weeks ago, and we were looking to get an expensive rangemaster at some point. Comet where one of the cheapest to buy the particular one we wanted and offered a buy now pay nothing for 12 month plan. As we hadn't enough saved yet, but didn't want to spend hundreds on an oven we would only get rid of in a few months we went for this option.
Put a deposit of a couple hundred down, and the rest was a credit agreement with Santander.
So today many phone calls flying around to Rangemaster, Comet and Santander and we had to hotfoot it to the store and get the credit agreement cancelled. It proved fairly difficult to get to the bottom of what was going on with our order, if anyone else is in this boat they need to do something about it NOW.

For everyone elses benefit too, the fact that Comet are now in Administration would normally mean that even if (in this case) the oven was in the store and ready for delivery, you as the customer would be able to reject it, cancel your credit agreement and walk away.
You would, however, lose any deposit paid, unless paid on a credit card in which case your card provider is duty bound to refund the deposit.

Nipped up today and the majority of stuff out you couldn't buy as the suppliers have said they will take it back. 50% of stuff was still full price and staff (who I felt very sorry for) were honest enough to say to people that they have been told no more than 10% discount will be offered on anything as most suppliers have said they will take back what isn't sold.

It felt quite grim in there and I was impressed with the attitude of the staff given the circumstances. I was virtually apologetic when asked if I wanted some help; as mentioned above, one felt like a vulture.

We all like a bargain but I don't think I could face the shop assistants under the circumstances.

Security guard on the door.
I remember going to the MFI closing down sale, (closed down and asset strtipped by the same mob), where one of the assistants was crying. She told me they were trying to sell the displays to have some wages, but people were walking in and stealing stuff.
