How about a permit system?

Every year from say September, you can apply for a fire work permit. This will cost you say £10.
The permit will allow you to purchase £150 worth of fire works for private use only.
All permits are numbered and can only be used once. (seller withholds permit after sale).
If the permit is copied and used again, both the buyer and seller are fined £1000.

Also, the fire works can only be used on the weekend closest to the 05/11, the 05/11 itself and new years eve.

Any other time will result in a £1000 fine and a ban from having a permit for 5 years.

To me, that is completely fair. It doesn't stop people using them and it will deter those that cause problems for others.

No chance; cost prohibitive...the government won't pay for something that isn't a (vote winning), issue and retailers certainly won't without there being appropriate legislation in place to force them to do so. Legislation cost money to implement never mind the costs to actually police it and who would cover the cost of that...the government.

Personally, I see no difference with fireworks.
And please answer me this Les - If it is, as you say, to celebrate an historic event, why the hell is it celebrated a week before the night itself and more than likely, up to New Years Eve?

More to the point, what are we celebrating exactly?
That a religious nut job almost committed mass murder and we stopped him? And we do that buy setting off fireworks to mimic what would have happened if he had succeeded? Plus, to top the lot, we make lots dummies that look human, stick them on a pile of wood and set light to it?
What a great message for kids. 'If in doubt - burn the ******* alive!'

Wow, well done us.

I would have thought that the whole idea of bonfire night would go against the sort of person that you appear to be Les.
A decent bloke with not a bad word to say about anyone.

It is funny how we don't celebrate the D-Day landings in a similar fashion.
I am forced to say that your entire post is worthless since it has nothing to substantiate the points you are attempting to make.

Secondly don't try to cover yourself by telling me to relax when some fellow addresses uncalled for insulting remarks towards me!

Sorry, but I stand by that remark. Just because your pets were safely locked up inside makes no difference. All pets should be safely locked up inside, where possible, but that doesn't stop thousands of them being so stressed as to require sedation.

And you try and sedate your dog/cat whatever for ten or more days, before, during and after the 5th of November. Its not possible.

Thankfully mine don't, but they still get stressed. My neighghbour's dog was a quivering wreck. And I know many more in exactly the same position. Unable to go outside or for a walk between the hours of 5pm and 11pm - although that curfew seems to be abandonedwith alarming regularity. You try locking your toilet door for that timeframe and see how that inconveniences you, unable to relieve yourself in case something explodes over your head that you don't and can't understand.

And as for your assertion that wildlife somehow has some sort of diary event every year and buggers off on holiday for a few days? Are you serious? Have you any idea about how it is in reality?

And I reiterate, all for the sake of personal gratification.

How did I insult you Les?

I don't agree with your views on fireworks. How does that offend you?

In my opinion people are making a huge fuss over nothing; this only lasts a few hours a night for a week (ten days at a stretch), a year and has done for the duration of all of our lives...take the precautions you think are necessary and quit spoiling other peoples fun.

I have three cats, they really don't give a crap about the fireworks...one of them sat in the conservatory watching the neighbours firework display.

Sorry my mistake, you didn't insult me.

You are quite entitled to disagree with my opinion on fireworks of course.

Mate,

Good for your cats. You're very fortunate.

Thats the point though - all it is is peoples "fun".

No reason why you still couldn't go to an organised display which will be significantly better and much more impressive than anyone's back garden display ever could be.

I am...as all three are rescue cats, (two being so scared they lived in my conservatory for almost six months and went rigid with fear when picked up), I know how bad anxious animals can get.

Life is about being happy and having fun and organised displays of anything just don't cut the mustard for the human condition...else we would all own super economical green cars and go to race events to watch. That’s never gonna happen though is it

People only keep pets for fun. Rather than banning fireworks lets put down all pets. Anyone who wants to interact with a pet can go to a petting zoo.
