I'd have thought that texting was so much more dangerous than answering a quick call on a mobile or adjusting the radio?
Never sent a text in my life btw.

Mythbusters didn't do any tests on the distractive potential of trying to fill in a crossword or play a game of chess while driving either, does that mean either of those wouldn't seriously compromise your ability to see where you're going or control your vehicle?
Anyhow, here's some actual figures, but bear in mind the total number of texts sent in the US was more than 100 times greater at the end of that 6 year period than at the start of it, so the annual accident rate now is probably going to be far higher than a straight 16000/6 average would suggest.

Two ****** caused the death of a [probably] innocent passenger.
We were almost totalled by a woman who was texting as she drove through a red light !
Always assume every other road user is trying to kill you !

Its more prolific in the U.S. because most people drive automatics so they have a hand free. The general attitude to driving is different too. Driving is more like something you do while your doing something else.

if its a smart phone with touchscreen then its wreckless, but again just as wreckless as changing radio, drinking, smoking, adjusting sat nav or any other activity which distracts the driver from actually driving safely. or road side advertising for that matter! why have them on roadsides?? the only way they could be veiwd is by removing the drivers attention from actually driving!!
emergency services drivers can use RT's, although usually the job of the passenger, it still happens. texting on an old style phone can actually be done without removing eyes from the road. not that im condoning it!

People shouldn't really do anything else but keeping their eyes on the road while driving except for talking to the passenger/s if they need to, or sing along with the music if it's any cool.

I've done it on the very rare occasion when sat stationary on a slow road or at traffic lights. Would not do it once on the move and certainly not on a dual carriageway / motorway. As has been said already plenty of other things that reduce peoples attentions - sat navs, stereo, food & drink, kids, passengers etc.
