I hope you're correct with that summary, any increase in price could be so damaging to everyone not just the motorists.

Surely there could be a rebate for these companies so Diesel can be taxed to the hilt, the dirty horrible stinking polluting vehicles.

I think you will find it was the Labour government that introduced the fuel tax escalator in the first place and with the Fair Fuel campaign which has been successful in negating around 13p in rises since they started
It's amazing that there are so few members on http://www.fairfueluk.com/ so i would urge you all to sign up. The bigger the numbers the more clout it wil have
Basicaly Pete, you don't know what you are talking about
I won't be voting labour

The money has to come from somewhere to plug the huge whole left by Labour, thank the Lord that its the Conservative party in charge now. Yes they might be higher tax bills coming our way but they dont really have much choice. Can you imagine where we would be if Labour were still in power. Good grief, its not worth thinking about. We are living in difficult times due to the irresponsible Labour era.

Average mileage in the UK is 12,000m per year.
Your 3p = £30 would equate to 1000 litres used which is 1000/4.545 = 220 gallons. The average car does 35mpg to the gallon. 35mpg x 220g = 7700m. Nowhere near £12k or £30
Remember this is taxation increase, not fuel cost increase, everytime the oil companies raise their prices, VAT element increases and then even more tax.
An extra £50pa for every motorist on the road has a massive knock on effect, it's not just the £50 extra in fuel costs, it's everything else that rises in line, delivery costs on all your supermarket goods increase so your weekly shopping increases by £5-10 etc, public transport costs rise, inflation rises, massive knock on effects.
They've already postponed 2 fuel duty rises in the last year, they normally have about 2-3 increases of this per year.
It's a double edged sword for the government, they've priced a lot of people off the road that the revenue produced is actually in decline, if only they would get it right and cut fuel duty substantially, the country would get moving again, a lot more fuel would get used and they would in effect bring in more revenue. In the last couple of years, due to soaring costs, fuel sales have dropped by about 1 billion litres.
Only 10yrs ago the price of a litre of fuel was 70p.

What you are forgetting that after labour came to power in 1997 they actually continued to raise the rate to 6% above inflation where it has been ever since

Did you just pluck this out of the sky and make this figure up?

From the ONS:
In 2010, there was an average of 960 trips per person per year – the lowest level since the mid-1970s. There were 1,061 stages, 6,726 miles travelled, and an average trip length of 7.0 miles

labour thought it was a very good idea to keep it going.
And have the latest government put it up. Well a penny i think and then scrapped further rises throughout the year and last year. There is a very strong chance (but I'm sure you don't read the broadsheets) that the 3p rise will be scrapped. Something i doubt labour would do.
There is a propsed investigation into the oil market and companies hedging to keep the price of oil falsley high.
Vote anything but Labour !

Well, currently, we have boys from Eton - boys who haven't had a proper job - boys who don't know what it's like to no have money - boys who have inherited all they have - boys who couldn't hold a candle to the working man!
At least with Blair, Brown and Darling we had men in post - and, as it happens, Brown saved the world from a 1930's collapse!
