Floorstanding speaker

If you are after floorstanding speakers Ant, you can't go wrong with what i own. They are a pair of B&W P4's and if you find them for sale you can pick them up for about £200 - £250.Originally they were about £675 new.I've had these for 15 years and replaced two tweeters, that's all.Sound really good for the money.

Hi Ant,
no one seems to have asked what kit you have, what you will be using it for and what you will be listening to.

He said he had ONkyo bookshelfers, and IIRC generally speaking, Onkyo's amps are highly rated...their speakers are so-so.
So imho A £150 set of floorstander will be FAR better than a set of cheap bookshelfers...just for teh bass response alone. High-end and mis frequencies however will depend on how fussy your hearing is
Nearly went for a M33i setup for my current home cinema....space/nagging restricitions forced me to have small satelites instead

Similar here,
alwayd been an advocate of floorstanders, hence the tannoys,
So when it was time for a change i went kef (kept the dual concentric / point source driver arangement), but a more compact speaker,
That said the bass extension when you sit in the right area is immense...
coupled with a nice Rel sub, it adds further extension & punch when needed
(movies)
I still have the Tannoy's, there hard to let go of
Check out ebay,

With regards to HI-Fi snobbery IMO with HI-fi you have four levels ...
1. The nasty stuff mass production stuff you get from the likes of Currys (Aiwa, Sony etc etc), just makes a noise. Waste of money.
2. Good value stuff from dedicated Speaker manufacturers (Wharfedale, Tannoy, Mission etc), much better than the above, usually worth the money
3. The mid-to high end stuff thats more expensive ( low-end Dali, low end Mordant Short etc) Good...but worth the extra over level 2?....meh! I'd say to the average listen NO!
4. Top end stuff like the above but their top of teh range models. Much better...but worth it? It varies. Totally down to if they use any pioneering/superior cabinet deisgns (TQWT, voigt pipes etc)
Its 3 and 4 you have to be careful IMHO, as between some iconic gems, is a whole load of average comanding high prices for sakes of snobbery....take some of these units apart and their constuction is no different or any more pioneering than lower end speaker cabinets. Vary rarely do you see Voigt pipes, folded horns or tranmission lines, most use bass reflex/bandpass designs no different to that found on a pair of £50 speakers, just made form better materials, with better drivers/crossovers and tuned better. IMHO those types of loudspeker should not command high prices as their principals of design are a whole order in magnitude less complex to perfect than cabinets that use Voigt principals, the latter of which I'd happily pay over £5K...you'd never see me pay that much for a simple bass reflex design/tuned port speaker.
But thats me being a snob
Cable? Don't get me started...I've seen "hi-Fi cable" thats actually uses plated aluminium....there is no way that is better than pure copper (Aluminium has a higher resistivity). These are usually branded as "silver", to imply they are made from it, when they contain nothing of the sort, all it is is bling.

What do you mean by 'top end Kefs'? Top end Kefs have a rrp of £20K, I doubt whether the B&W XT range would be better.

I'm not sure how far you can push your budget but if you can afford a pair of Monitor Audio RS6 then i'd go for them, if your lucky you may get a pair for £300 - £350 2nd hand.
I currently have the RX6 the updated version of the RS6, i previously owned the RS6 and they truely are stunning for the money.
