1. Enginetuner 2.1 engine build, drive in and drive out - fully mapped and ready for the road.
2. Break the car and sell off as much as possible (obviously not the engine).
3. Sell the car as is and let someone else sort out the engine issue.

To say I am cheesed off is an understatement.
I'm gutted for you mate! Could you chuck in a cheap engine and enjoy the car (partially) whilst having the 2.1 built?

I'm not sure I agree with the general acceptance that 500bhp is not that high a power output. It's a hell of a lot of bhp imo, especially for a piddly little 2ltrs of capacity. Ask yourself why production high performance cars with this kind of bhp, have far bigger capacities. The combustion forces involved are immense.

What skews any general impression is perhaps the sheer number of 500bhp set-ups now around, but out of those, how many actually stay together without issue. You'll be surprised how those numbers translate.

500bhp is no easy feat with proven reliability. Most of the cars on this forum are weekend runners, which again, skews the general impression imo.

However, this is not what the recent experiences of Cannon Fodder are all about imo. His set-up hasn't appeared to have been up to scratch from the off with the recent round of mods.

From my experiences it is all about the knowledge of the engine builder and something that I don't think is realised, is that these engines and their builds have nuances. If you're not using an experienced Subaru engine builder (and that in itself makes a bif difference imo - being Subaru experienced!), who has a proven record, you really are taking on increased risks. The problem is that many of the engines being built are being ragged to 450bhp and beyond as part of the build.... I'm sorry, but at this level of performance, any short comings in the build and/or spec, will be shown sooner rather than later.... that's part of the issue imo.

Cannon Fodder,
Sorry to hear about your current situation. It's never welcomed news.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

Gutted for you Ty, will all these work you and Ryan have put in, it's shame that she's off the road again! Whatever you decide to do, it's gonna cost money so make sure it feels the right decision.

Thanks Jon, I do have a lot to think about and the one stop shop at Enginetuner is the most appealing to me in terms who I would ask to sort it out for me.

Thanks Tubbs, yes a 2.1 would properly exploit the capabilities of the car but decisions, decisions...

I know people are saying to have it built by a good company but running big bhp you must expect that no matter how good a build it can still let go at any time as the engine was not made to run such big power through a little 2ltr

If it was back as a spec c should be it would also be easier to sell in the future
I agree Lee it is too nice a car to break after all the effort that has gone into it let alone the money, I just need to get some figures down onto paper and see where it stands in terms of cold hard facts.

I can see where you are coming from Ryan, there are standard UK 2.0 newage STi engines running 450bhp as daily drivers and have been for some time. I believe JGM ran his daily driver like this for a long time and even then I don't think the engine gave up.

I'm a firm believer in using one of the top boys when it comes to engine rebuilds. Thats what they do, day after day and know everything inside and out.

Park it up and leave it for a while, Mule over the options and then progress with what YOU want to do
I agree totally with you Danny, I should have had Enginetuner, API, Scoobyclinic, Advanced Automotives to name but a few give me some quotes rather than the route that I chose.

Unfortunately hindsight gives us all 20/20 vision and if I had a time machine then I now know what I should have / shouldn't have done.

As the saying goes learn from your mistakes, never to repeat them.

Thanks for the kind words, I don't think I'd put a second hand engine in with the SC50 as it just wouldn't be worth it - it's been bad enough knowing that the engine has been limiting the turbo without having to destroy even a cheapie engine.

But I totally see where you're coming from, if I go down the rebuild route then I will just have to get down the docks and earn some extra cash (although I would probably end up bankrupt).

This car has been almost from the start of the year destined to miss every show, run and event - that is what pains me the most after all I have spent on her.

This year she would have looked A1 at the shows but she'd already missed the first two of the year, let alone Rallyday and summer PCAD which I can also see being missed as well.

Everything was in place for her to shine at the later shows but yet again the cruel mistress of fate decides to shit on my parade.

I appreciate the brutal honesty Shaun, this car wasn't even a weekend car for most of the time - it literally might not get used for 2-3 weeks until the urge takes me to drive her.

I agree that you pay for what you get, there is another phrase about paying primates and the results but I am sure you get the idea.

This whole experience has been a massive learning curve for me, and I hope that in the future should anyone come across this thread that they will learn from what has gone wrong for me.

I'd hate anyone (apart for perhaps a select few) to have to go through the ups, downs, highs and lows that this whole episode has seen to bestow upon me.

For future reference when faced with a big decision to make don't go for the easiest, quickest or cheapest repair possible. Sit back and think about it in the cold hard light of day, don't make snap decisions and then learn to regret them later.

The reason I say cheapest is that at the time it seemed like the most cost effective repair but with the unforeseen costs later borne by myself alone this was far from the case.

Before I forget many thanks to those today who either called, sent FB or text messages - I really appreciated the kind words of encouragement and offers of help should I need it.

Not the best birthday I have had if I'm being 100% honest, but made easier by the kind thoughts of others.

Apologies for my slurring of words ty and possibly not making much sense at all, I was more than a little pissed and was trying not to set the neighbours hedge on fire with the BBQ!!
Chins up mate, make the decision that's right for you and no one else. It's all very easy for us to say get it rebuilt by ET etc but it don't come cheap unfortunately, if you can see yourself keeping it for a good few years then that's the way to go, if not then set the bitch on fire!

Oh and a belated happy birthday mate, I didn't realise till this mornin!

No problem Rob, to be honest you didn't sound any different to how you normally do.

I know what you mean about the expense it's a little eye watering to say the least.

Still thinking about what to do at present as I don't want to rush into something I regret later.

Thanks Glenn, I can definitely set the sense behind putting it back to standard but even that wouldn't be cheap - that would require a built engine plus sourcing all the standard parts as well.

Default Decision Made

After some serious thinking on the matter it looks 99.99% likely that my car will be broken for parts or sold as is.

It really has been a hard decision to reach as this car has had a lot of time and effort put into it and it pains me to do this but I have to let my head overrule my heart on this occasion.

Again I would like to thank those who have been in touch over the weekend, plus of course Ryan for all of his efforts and thoughts on the matter.

I will get some prices together shortly and start a thread in the breaking cars section of the members marketplace.

I've not commented yet Ty...very sorry to hear this.

Yes, you'll get a lot of your money back breaking the car but, if I've understood it right, this car is not your daily driver, and you were planning/expecting to go for a 2.1 build next year anyway?

So why not mothball the car? Come back to it in 6 months?

No problem Tim, the plan was to get the summer and autumn out of the way but being as the engine could go 'pop' at any time, but I am not going to be able to do that now.

It definitely isn't a daily driver or even a weekend car and what little use I would have had out of it this summer would have been preferable to it spending the next 12 months or so out of use.

I know that if the car was mothballed it would just get to the point where I would just get frustrated and end up selling it off for relative peanuts.

Unfortunately the cold hard economics of the situation are such that I have to take an objective detached view.

I did enquire about that Steve but with all due respect to Fud he built it himself, there is no warranty at all on it and it has a quite major problem which will require a stripdown - so £2200 is a big gamble to take on an unknown issue which I would have to pay to sort out.

You bloody vulture Shaun, nothing is definite yet as there is still 0.01% of doubt in mind but if or when the times comes for the car to be stripped it will be handled by Ryan and all the parts will be either collected or shipped from Leominster.
