David @ API is the "old and weak" one! I'm sure he'll even turn green when we reads all of this!

wont the cost involved getting it back to standard spec be similar to building a 2.1 stroker?

I understand why your doing it but a build by a respected tuner should be fine with your ancillaries as they are all top quality.

I think selling the recent expensive additions will near enough fund a forged 2.0 with a good re-map after run in will make a fantastic road car!

To be honest with my recent experiences I've had big power and I couldn't care less for it if I am 100% honest, you can have just as much fun if not more with 350bhp than 500bhp.

I just need to sort out a minor issue with the suspension and then it's happy days.

That is what I am going to do Gaz, I've always said they are great cars in near standard spec.

They certainly will (hopefully) pay for the engine overhaul plus other parts to return the car back to a standard condition, and as Wasbo posted yesterday in the future cars in standard condition will be more sort after.

Best of luck mate, lets hope if you ever fall into a bucket of ****, you don't come out sucking your thumb
The bank has already been broken into, the safe deposit boxes have been smashed open and the contents looted.

If I did ever fall into that bucket as long as that's all I was sucking on was my thumb then it's better than something else.

Thanks Shaun, I've had some success already in sourcing standard parts the only thing that may give me a problem is the VF36 turbo but even that problem shouldn't take long to overcome.

That's one of the reasons Ive left mine as it is apart from the fact I can't afford to mess with it, I just like the fact I can get in it and drive it and not worry.........Too much

You're right Brian, with just the an exhaust change and remap they make for a great car.

Totally agree, your always on tender hooks, thinking something will break or blow up with a big power car.

I'm looking for a nice, safe, reliable 380BHP for this car matched to decent brakes and suspension, 350-380 is plenty.

API rebuilt my old Type R and I would not hesitate to use them again, First class service

Well ty, if nothing else youve got yourself one enormous thread, 32 pages ffs! Best ive managed is 2, ive gotta lot to learn😃 rekon you should start a new thread called "Spec C -Its Staying.....Again"!!

Glad YOU have reached a conclusion that is right for you mate.

Looking at your findings of recent big power, and all the stress thats involved let alone costings, i think its safe to say ill keep my little wrx as it is at its modest 330 odd bhp, and save myself a lot of headche and worry!

See you tomoro

Rob

Wise choice ty, I agree my type r was such a good car and only a few slight mods but high power means high stress levels. There more than fat enough as is for road use. Another vote for api best garage iv ever bought a car from and David's a great guy always looked after us.

So the plan has hatched and me and Ty had a talk tonight and the car will coming down the workshop next weekend for the strip down and sale of goodies to move fourth on 'back to standard'.
The engine will be removed and Ty will transport it to his garage of choice while I'm busy removing/refitting parts.

Watch this space as they say................................again

What sort of spec is it going back to? Like when you first had it? But still forged?

Power isn't everything, a well set up car will see most things off that are just made for Hp.

My Clio is only 200Hp, but combined with the handling that's won it the best hot hatch and brakes to match.it almost leaves people shocked. Combined with semi slicks. I love it.

Just return it as it was, and enjoy using the cars full potential.

What was it like at that 500hp Ty? Can almost imagine it being dangerous if not concentrating lol

Agreed always listening for a strange noise, for a track car then fine it goes with the territory but as you say 350-380bhp is the sweet spot for road use.

Thanks Rob, yes see you tomorrow night and it's been good to have people to bounce some opinions off as a different point of view can help you see something that you've missed.

Thanks to all those who've offered advice to me since the weekend, it's been much appreciated.

Thanks Daz, I don't need any help getting stressed - I used to drive the car in order to relieve the worries of the day not add to them.

If I am honest Geraint the car felt better at between 350-400bhp where the acceleration was more or less instant and available at all times.

I agree and have learned that a well sorted out car is the fastest car you can have, it's no good having 500bhp if you can't go around corners and having to mash the brakes all the time.

I know how fast your Clio is as you had no problem keeping up with me, and I was only slightly pulling away at that private runway we both found on the way home one time from Castle Combe.

Don't get me wrong there is nothing per se with 500bhp but as I have found out it was nearly the death of my engine, as for using it on the road if anything it is just too much for the road.

Once it was on boost it would pull hard virtually all the way to the rev limiter, I prefer cars with more acceleration from virtually 500rpm which is what the smaller twin scroll turbo's can give you.

As for being dangerous - very, you could easily be doing stupid speeds in next to no time at all.

Like most things in life it was nice to have it for a while, I'm glad I tried it but it wasn't for me in the long run.

No a VF37 would be ok, from what I understand the VF36 will spool very slightly earlier but is the VF37 capable of making slightly more power?

I am no expert on these turbochargers but only going on what I am sure I read somewhere about them.

Would you like to PM me a price for the VF37?

Ty you can ignore this if you wish but just a thought..

It sounds almost identical to the last failure, it might be worth having a crack test carried out on your heads or block. You may have a hair line crack in the aluminium.

The uv stuff might show it up but who does it I don't know.

Just my thoughts.

Like I said you may ignore this thought.

Both the cylinder heads and block sections are going off for pressure testing and any necessary reworking/machining required.

Thanks for the post.

Tbho if the last failure had been down to cracked heads/block or indeed caused a crack after the failure it would have shown as such long before now Dylan.
Plus the excessive oil consumption isn't down to cracks anywhere either.

So what happened to the crack during the last 5K miles then,I find it extremely hard to believe the crack would just disappear and return to cause issues again no?
