How much to buy an external 33.6 modem with cables etc? May just go to PC World and buy a new one - cheaper than buying an ADSL one anyway.

Question

What wrong with BT we haven't had to much of a problem with BT, customer service is fairly good and Don't all the others go through BT anyway, it could be worse i could be with the NTL shisters, Demon's not cheap

And we have 2 pc's with a router, both on the bbs and stuff at the same time with no problems.

Is this Pipex modem an USB one? I've been told to steer clear of USB ADSL modems.

Greg (signed up to Pipex and all sorted within 10 days - but Dabs couldn't deliver my router )

Gregh - it is the Fujitsu FDX310 USB modem, but to be honest the only people who say to stay clear are the speed freaks and fanatics. i.e. the type of folk who have to have the best of everything yada yada.

USB modems are fine for the average net surfing man or woman.

Bob - they have reviewed ADSL modems in this months .net magazine, and the one we will recieve came out top with 5 stars - get in!!! Said it is very fast

Just sent my old modem off today via special delivery. Fingers crossed now.

How did you package yours??? I just but it in a jiffy bag & sent it recorded.

Not long to go mate!!!! BTW spoke to BT the other day & they said, although our line can receive ADSL, on ordering, a engineer will come out to test the lines to see whether we can get full use of ADSL. Any views on this??

I had the original box, so just cut up some envelopes and wrapped it like a Chrimbo pressie. Did you go for the £5.15 delivery option?

With regards the BT line test, I think they test it at the exchange to make sure the quality is OK, and that we are not too far from the exchange. There are 2 ranges - ADSL is up to 3.5km, and RADSL (Rate Adaptive) is up to 5.5km. I am just on the borderline for the 3.5 i think. However it Only affects upload speed so not a problem. My only problem is that the extension here in the office doesn't actually ring for some reason. It works, but when you plug the phone in, the phone doesn't ring. May have to have an engineer out anyway.

Lets just hope they can post the new modems soon enough.

Bob - how you getting on at your side?

Had an email through with activation date of 29.05.02. They also confirmed receipt of my old modem, and said the new one will be sent 48 hours after BT have informed them of activation - pretty cool so far, and communication has been good.

DW Cant wait now

Hi Mo

The lead for mine was a 25 pin into the modem, then the smaller plug into the Com ports on the PC - not sure if it is 9-pin, but it was the smaller ones, like you get on monitors, joysticks etc

Bobby

Sorry to hear that - I am also confirmed for activation for this Wednesday, and have already received and installed my ADSL modem (just waiting for it to go from "No Signal" to full signal). I hope I dont get the email you've just got.

Try the forums over at adslguide.org.uk. They have been very helpful for me this past week, with setting up the modem etc, and the Pipex MD frequents the board (David, I think he is called).

Keep us updated

I received two mails from Pipex this morning. The first to say that it'll be activated Wednesday and the second to say that I'll receive my modem in three to four days! Guess I'll have to wait till Friday then

btw pipex are dependent on BT doing the line test, activation etc, so I guess a delay is out of their hands.

Spoke to Pipex just now & the reason for being turned down is due to the noise levels on my line. Aparently they support upto 55 DB & im running at 59.6 DB.

Any recommendations on how to resolve this problem??
