A reg Fiat Uno 55 (de-badged!)

E reg Pug 309 XSi 1.6 (de-badged!)

1) Fiat Panda 45, Y reg. An unreservedly terrible car - clockwork engine, noisy, uncomfortable, unreliable. Very glad when the bodywork finally rotted so badly there was nothing left to weld together. Sold it to someone who was apparently going to do it up and give it to his girlfriend. Hope she dumped him - I would.

2) Rover 216S, G reg. Much bigger, quite comfy. Still, very heavy and no power steering so it was really hard work to park. Kept dumping its coolant all over the road. I built up a good toolbox during the time I owned this car. Hope it's now been crushed.

3) Nissan 100NX, L reg. Targa roof, quite unusual, much more reliable. Luxuries like electric windows and power steering. Fuel injected engine that didn't have the 'personality' (read faults) of the previous cars' engines. Quite sad to see it go actually - I sold it locally and do still see it around from time to time. Glad it hasn't been crushed.

4) Impreza Turbo, V reg, lots of Prodrive toys. Fantastic machine, 'nuff said.

5) Westfield SEiGHT - looking to buy, right now. Anyone got one for sale?

Andy.

(1st) Mk2 Ford Cortina 1.3 estate (hand painted). Cost £20 inc. 1yr MOT! Tax was £55 & insurance £150. Worst thing about this car was the gearstick which kept coming out when hitting 2nd!!!!!

(2nd) Mk1 Ford Escort 1.1 saloon. It was cheaper to buy this than get the Cortina thru the MOT! It could do 105mph flat out! The brakes were drums all round (lethal when wet!).

(3rd) Spartan Kit Car (based on 2.0 Ford Cortina) - looked like a Morgan. Great summer car. Why oh why did I sell this!

(4th) 1988 Ford Granada 2.0 Ghia - it was too cheap to turn down. A good car but I was ready for the "pipe & slippers brigade"!

(5th) 1988 Toyota Celica GT4 (now we're talking!).

(6th) Pug 206Gti. An excellent car but.........I got fed up of not being able to put all the power down & waiting at junctions for big enough gaps to pull out. FWD & wet just don't go together!

(CURRENT) MY01. I wish I had a scooby years ago! This is the only car that I look forward to driving & it never fails to put a smile on my face! I thought all 4WD handled the same - the scooby defies logic, places where the GT4 used to understeer, the scooby just digs in & goes round!

(NEXT) STi. I test drove this. When I got back in my WRX MY01, it felt like it had no turbo or brakes (yes, the STi is that much better!). Unfortunately, I couldn't afford £10K to trade up.

PS. If you own an STi & drive it to its full potential on public roads, it'll be bye bye to Mr. Licence within the year. Did someone mention Laser Jammer?

Out of 33 cars owned in 10 years, some of the highlights:

1/ My first car, Mini 850, P reg (1976), bought for £200 when I was 14. Fitted with Stage 3 head, twin SU's, Cooper S reverse rims. Rotten as a pear. I had BIG ideas for the car, as you do when you are 14, but the shell was past saving and me and Dad broke it for bits, cutting the shell up with a hacksaw and cold chisel. Got more for the car in bits than I originally paid.

2/ Fiesta 950 Van, Y reg, bought when I was 16. My second car. Spent months tidying up the bodywork and making it gleam, before destroying it 6 weeks after passing my test. Managed to fell a telegraph pole and cut off the village's phones for a few hours. Blood everywhere, but luckily no serious injuries. You live and learn..

3/Escort XR3. Mint original W reg carbed model in black. Stepped out of a Mini into this when I was 18, and still thought it was crap. Sold it after 2 weeks.

4/ Nova GSi Group N rally car. When I was 20, I decided to sell my life and invest a massive £5000 (a lot of coin when you're 20) into some competition machinery. Nova's were crap road cars but superb rally cars. In 2 years, we did 20 odd forest rallies and plenty of single venues with lots of successes, only throwing general service items and the odd panel at the car in the process. I went to work in it every day, chucked it through the woods at weekend, pulled the numbers off it on Sunday night and went to work in it again still dirty on Monday. Six years after I sold it the car is still going with its latest owner, 50 odd rallys later and the head has still never been off. Amazing.

5/ Capri 2.8 injection. Bought brand new by my father, sold, and then bought back 9 years later again by my father as a 21st present for me. I am 28 on Friday. I will never sell it.

6/ Impreza Turbo MY2000, bought new in 1999. You never forget your first new car, do you?

7/ Astra GTE Mk2. Always liked 'em as a kid. Should have left it at that. Bought a very low mileage one owner car in 2000 as a bit of a toy. One of the worse cars I have ever driven. Hated it so much I couldn't even be arsed selling it, and gave it to my cousin as a 17th birthday present. He sold it after a fortnight.

8/ Peugeot 205GTi 1.9. My current motoring nemesis. NOTHING suits me better. Always fancied owning one, never did until I sold the MY2000 early and needed a cheap stop gap car until my MY2001 arrived. Bought Pug. WRX did arrive, Pug sold. Discovered that WRX was no where near as FUN to drive as the Pug. Deeply regretted it. Sold WRX, bought another 205. And an MX5. And a Golf GTi. STILL had change, so invested it. Happy man again.

First car Renault 5 1.4 - good fun even it it was made of tin foil.
Second car Renault 19 16V - quick++ car but lost a huge amount of cash when I sold it. It is interesting to see how many other people have had this model.
Third car MY00 Impreza Turbo - thankfully now have no scary understeer unlike the Renault.

After a spell driving my Mum's 957 Fiesta (oh so slow!) and then my Dad's 1.4 Astra (really did feel like a rocket ship in comparison) and 2.0 Mondeo (getting better):
Pug 1.9 GTI - Good fun but flimsy and don't lift off much mid bend.
Prelude VTEC - Great engine and good handling but not much space.
MY98 WRX Scooby - Excellent all round and sooo much faster than all the above.

Not as many as some on the board,

1979 MGBGT @18, kept for 2 years but failed MOT again.
1981 Sierra 2.0l, kept for a year before big end went.
1984 Manta Hatchback, quite good. Sold after i moved to HK.

Daihatsu Sportrak 4x4, fun but bouncy. Floated it down a river.
Ford Capri Conv. auto, Auzzie style, a US Mercury, Awful.
1989 Porsche 944 Turbo. Wow, 250bhp and a woosh / growl.
1999 STi V5. Double Wow but no woosh - just growl.

The last two are for sale.

Ok,

the hit parade:

1. Mini 1275GT - ace car, rebuild and gasflowed the engine, straight through LCB, v.loud, breathing kit hi lift Kent cams mmmmm

2. Citroen 2CV, actually a really good laugh (once you get used to being overtaken everywhere) great off road, no really!

3. Use of dad's Golf GTI 8v 1991, very nice & quite sensible

4. Use of mum's Clio Williams, very nice although not too much grip and I had a horrible massive oversteer moment on a roundabout proving to my mate that you can't get it to oversteer...Doh!

5. Peugeot 205 1.9D, stuffed into ditch, 3rd party insurance (ow) repaired for 1.5grand, before I get a chance to change the insurance to fully comp some T0$$3R smacks into it drunk driving while parked up and runs off. Lost a shedload of cash on that one.

6. Peugeot 106 1.1 less said about that the better

7. BMW 1.8 automatic less said about that the better apart from the hilarious tendency to not go anywhere and as you (tried) to accelerate out of a corner it would do nothing so you put your foot down a bit more and then some more, end result was double kickdown and lurid oversteer. More than one sticky moment in that monstrosity. Servicing was great though

8. BMW 1.8 Estate (company car), nice, poor spec though. At least it was a manual

9. Focus 2.0 Ghia (company car), Lovely, fun to drive, hugely practical servicing a joke compared to BMW tho

10. Use of dad's Lotus Elise, Bell & Colvill Super 160, hubba hubba, best steering of any car period. Wonderful fluid handling and massive stomp. Crappy gearchange, lethal in the wet/ice/on the brakes.

11. BMW 1.8 (company car) back to the Bimmers, servicing was the lure

12. Scoob MY01, not really anything I can say apart from the fact that my dad now says he wishes he had bought a Scoob instead of his Elise

Sorry for the diatribe, turned out a bit longer than expected!
Cheers,

Simon

X reg Vauxhall Chevette "Silhouette" special edition Marvellous car when you're 17 1 year.

B reg Fiat Regatta. I don't want to talk about it. It was ****e. Should have kept the shoveit. 1 year

E reg 1.4 Fiesta ghia. Far too much ice. Far, far too much - kept for 4 years

H reg renault 19 16v. Lost ****loads of money on this as it was a nail. Knackered electrics, knackered gearbox, knackered callipers. Bought with my heart, not my head. Loved it, but it was just stupidly expensive to run. 1 year

L reg Astra 1.4. Cheap. Cost me 12 quid for a pair of front discs. Just what I needed after the 19 moneypit. 1 year

N reg Clio 1.8 rsi. Wonderful. Loved it. Test drove a Puma, Audi A3 1.8t, lots of things and still loved the Clio. Kept for a year and a bit

Then I test drove a Scoob.

Sold the clio to pay the deposit for an import UK spec, and borrowed...

1965 Morris Minor Convertible. Five months of rear wheel drive mayhem . The chassis flexed quite a bit and if you hit a bump whilst cornering then the driver's door would fly open. Got more looks than in the Scoob, plus let out of every junction

Then..
V reg Impreza Turbo 2000, from Holland.

The feeling of picking up your first new car is absolutely undefinable. Especially from a small garage in Holland when the garage owner has obviously gone to town with the polish.

"Is it mine?"
"Yes, that's yours..."
Tries not to hug large Dutch bloke with dodgy beard

Unlike any time in my life, I don't know what I want next. So I'm keeping it.
