Nearly all free range farms like ours is protected by electric fencing or electric netting. Each field is secured with electric fencing going all the way round the edge against the hedge. It does a great job to be honest with you, but a fox can still quickly nip through if the bugger has a chicken in sight, especially if it hasn't been shocked before/learnt from a shock.
but once its shocked once is its tendancy to endure the pain and return? and what about proper fencing, like chicken wire, with your sections electrified and some barbed wire mayeb strategically placed?

surely if you put in enough cost effective deterrants then they will find an easier meal elsewhere??

or like said before for pest control shoot it dead not hunt it down and have it so petrified then potentially maimed and torn to death - or does that just not happen then?

I have been told by farmers that a fox is perfectly capable of burrowing under a fence or a wall to get at the fowl.

We have several foxes living around my area and the farmers who keep cows etc, are not bothered about them.

If they wanted them dead they would take them out with their shotguns which is at least a far more humane way to despatch them don't you think?

I think a lot of those who ride to hounds actually get a thrill at seeing the results of a kill by the hounds. Not my style I can assure you. Bloodthirsty lot!

Dairy farmers arnt realy going to be worried about looseing a cow to a fox are they
What happens if they just wound the fox with the shotgun/rifle
Its all about the chase, not the kill

Yes they will.Thats why its not as simple to put a fence up,you have to burry it in the ground a couple of foot

so a fence cant be installed a bit deeper with periodic other deterrants included,

i dont like the claims that we cant build a fox proof area, because they can dig a bit.

still say effective pest control should be allowed in proven cases, by shooting them dead as quickly as possible, minus the pack of dogs, the horseback enthusiasts and there traditions and trying to scare the animal as much as humanly possible, just go for a horse ride instead or walk your dogs??

That would be boring though, nothing like having a good laugh with your mates whilist watching a Fox getting ripped apart by a pack of mutts.

It's quite hard to explain to someone who doesn't know much about farming or have an idea of effective certain types of fencing are. Orange netting fencing might be good in a garden for a small number of chickens, but when you have 50 acres of land to cover, it really isn't suitable. Another thing, netting fencing rests and touches the ground. When this is properly electrified, it will be shorting out on the ground sparking and loosing voltage, especially when it rains. The fencing we use and what most poultry farmers use is Rappa fox proof electric fencing. It is 9 strands of wires spaced tight together near the bottom, with larger spaces at the top and probably comes to about 5 1/2 foot high. Alternative strands of wire are properly earthed while the others are electrified.

A fox is very unlikely to jump over it, but I could slip through the bottom if it was quick, but once shocked, it wouldn't be coming back again. Also it's certainly not possible to dig a trench around each field, under gates and entrances, in order to put some sort of animal proof digging wire???
