Very sorry to hear about this.
If it's any help, a local policeman I work for has put down gravel all round his house. It's impossible to get to any of the doors or windows from the outside without making a loud crunching sound.

Question:
How long does it usually take for an Insurance claim to actually materialise into me being paid out of replaced with the stolen goods?
Its been a good few weeks, well since 2nd Dec, and yes I have rung them, and they say they are waiting for more information from the assessor! This is the guy that visited on the 14th Dec, so practically a month ago, and told me it should be straight forward.
I have never claimed for insurance for anything before, but you would think for all the 10's of thousands of pounds I have paid for all my Insurance in my adult life without making a single claim up until now they would just get on with it!
Bloody frustrating, I think Im more bothered becuase I have bought 2 cr_ppy replacement tablets to replace the iPads, and they are just bloody one step away from being useless, and that we are back to my 9 year old Dell laptop which my daughter uses for school work and is very slooooow. Yes I could have bought 2 more iPads, but the pesky insurance aparantly may replace the items or give me vouchers for apple etc which would double me up, whereas these pesky tablets were only £70 each.
Anyway rant over!

Six weeks is about the maximum amount of time I would expect it to take.
If I were you I would call your insurance again and when they tell you they are waiting for the assessor ask for their number and speak to them directly. If they won't give it to you tell them to get off their **** and ring for you as they need to remember you pay them for insurance and they are quick enough when it comes to taking your premium so they should get on with processing your claim!

A lot depends on how easy the claim is to assess and in your case from what I know that should be easy.

You see the trouble I have is that Im actually reluctant to push them as I dont want them to think this guy is pain, so lets drag it out further, or worse still simply decline the claim
My Insurance is with Swinton as they are/were the best quote price for the cover I wanted. If you think I should go elsewhere then I will happily move on when renewal is due. I've been with Norwich Union aka Aviva for 5 years until they hiked the price up 2 fold last year, and then I moved on. So I actually feel guilty claiming as I have only been with Swinton for around 3 months prior to the incident
I'll give them a bell tomorrow, watch this space

I am no expert on home insurance, but Swinton have been around a long time and I have never heard anything really bad about them... that said you only find out how good they are when you need to claim of course. As long as you get it sorted with not too much fuss I wouldn't think badly of them.
I was with Aviva, but like you found they hiked the price up too much and am now with Direct Line because they offered me the best deal for covering my music system and collection properly and doing a bit of research online they seem to be pretty good over claims.
Hopefully I won't need to find out.
Anyway hope you get it sorted soon

The insurers took two months, maybe longer to write him a cheque.

Update:
Had a call from the assessor today, they quote me £900 minus my excess, which is around half the initial claim ;(
They are stating that the iPod Video, iPad2, and Lenovo Laptop have no proof of purchase. I obviously argued on the phone for a little while until I was told that I was being a litle OTT about the situation. He then claimed he would round up the claim to £1150, which is £1000 after excess fees.
The mind boggles! Im now trying to find the people I bough these items from, starting with the wifes iPad2, I bought it from a guy on here over a year ago, at the back end of 2011 as an Xmas present. Ive posted a thread up in anticipation

Cheers guys for the comments.
Here is hopefully the last of it after nearly 11 weeks..
I managed to get a bank statement from Dec 2011 (cost £5 by the way), then with this took it into the my local branch whom looked into the transaction, and spoke to head office. The pulled up the BACS transfer that stated "iPad 2 and extras". Bank signed and stamped the "screen shot" of the transaction.
I scanned the said documents and sent them to the assessor, he rang me within a few days and offered me a further £218 (total £1218)...... huh, this iPad was £350. Basically he tried to pluck the excess from it although we (or more like he) agreed that £1150 (£1000 after excess) was the sum so far prior to this late POP.
Anyway after another drawn out Mr Day angry on the phone resulted in £1518 (£1368 after excess) which is a result in the grand scale.
The total of my claim was £1700, and this was for item I noticed had gone missing at the time, items that I claimed for, and not items I have since realised have been stolen too!
The moral now is persevere with the claim and try to have all items backed up with POP or photographs of the said goods, and although the insurance state they need the list of inventory asap to help speed up the claim, this is clearly set out to make you panic and rush the list and hopefully miss some items!
Rob
